In a significant move to combat the rising tide of misinformation, government officials and academic experts gathered in Bahawalpur to address the growing concerns over fake news and extremist content circulating on social media platforms.

The roundtable conference, held at Ijwa Garden, brought together government information officers, university professors, and students to discuss strategies for countering violent extremism and misinformation online. The event was organized by the Media Cell of the Press Information Department (PID), specifically its Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) division.

Tahira Saeeda, Director General of the Press Information Department, co-chaired the conference alongside Project Director Shahid Imran Ranjha. The event drew significant participation from faculty and students of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), one of the region’s premier educational institutions.

Dr. Muazzam Khan Durrani, a senior faculty member at IUB, highlighted the detrimental effects of fake news on public opinion and social stability. “In today’s digital landscape, the responsibility of verifying information falls not only on students but on every citizen,” Dr. Durrani emphasized, underscoring the universal nature of the challenge.

The proliferation of unverified information has become a pressing concern in Pakistan, where social media penetration continues to grow rapidly amid varying levels of digital literacy. This digital expansion has created fertile ground for misinformation campaigns that often fuel societal divisions and extremist viewpoints.

Dr. Hanan Khan Tareen delivered a comprehensive presentation on how social media platforms are frequently misused to spread false narratives. Her analysis explored the mechanisms through which fake news spreads and the potential consequences for social cohesion and democratic processes in Pakistan.

The conference placed special emphasis on equipping young people with the tools needed to identify and counter misinformation. Dr. Abida Noreen, Dr. Owais Gillani, and Raza Majid collectively stressed the critical importance of media literacy education, particularly among youth who are heavy consumers of digital content.

Pakistan has witnessed several instances where misinformation spread through social media platforms has led to violent incidents and community tensions. The government’s focus on countering violent extremism through media literacy represents an acknowledgment of the link between online content and real-world consequences.

Participants reached a consensus that combating fake news requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving journalists, educational institutions, and individual social media users. This collaborative model recognizes that government efforts alone cannot stem the tide of misinformation without active public participation.

During the interactive session, students engaged directly with DG Tahira Saeeda and Project Director Shahid Imran Ranjha, raising questions about practical approaches to identifying and countering false information. This exchange highlighted the importance of intergenerational dialogue on digital literacy issues.

The conference in Bahawalpur is part of a broader national initiative to address extremist content online. Pakistan’s government has increasingly recognized the role of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and potentially contributing to radicalization processes among vulnerable populations.

The event concluded with a recognition ceremony where DG Tahira Saeeda and Project Director Ranjha presented shields to the participating speakers, acknowledging their contributions to this critical public discourse.

This conference represents one component of Pakistan’s evolving strategy to combat extremism through improved information ecosystems and heightened public awareness, particularly as digital connectivity continues to expand throughout the country.
