Meghalaya Minister Urges Press to Combat Misinformation While Celebrating Media Freedom

Information & Public Relations Minister Lahkmen Rymbui of Meghalaya affirmed the state’s commitment to press freedom while challenging journalists to adapt to a changing media landscape dominated by social media and misinformation. Speaking at a World Press Freedom Day event in Shillong on Saturday, Rymbui highlighted the unique media environment in the northeastern Indian state.

“When we talk about World Press Freedom Day in the context of Meghalaya, I am very happy that in this society, since time immemorial, there is freedom,” Rymbui said during the event jointly organized by the Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Shillong Press Club, and Meghalaya Editors & Publishers Association.

The minister emphasized that Meghalaya has maintained a distinctive relationship between government and media, unlike some other regions in India and abroad where press restrictions have increased. “We are very fortunate, especially these days when we have seen all over the world, even in our country, there are some restrictions and some diktat on what to be done and what not to do,” he noted.

Meghalaya, one of India’s smaller northeastern states with a population of about 3 million, has traditionally enjoyed relatively open civic discourse. The state’s media landscape includes several English and Khasi language newspapers, local television channels, and a growing digital media presence.

Rymbui expressed concern about declining press influence following the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing to the rising challenge of social media platforms where misinformation spreads rapidly. “Since the time of Covid-19, we have seen that the value of the press is slightly coming down with the advent of social media. It is very difficult for people to judge which one is right and which one is wrong,” he observed.

The minister’s comments come at a time when India’s press freedom rankings have faced international scrutiny. The country ranked 161st out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, highlighting broader national concerns about media independence.

In his address, Rymbui acknowledged the critical role of the press as “the fourth pillar in society” while encouraging journalists to maintain factual reporting. “You have total freedom in Meghalaya. If you want to build a society which is vibrant, a society which can deliver to the people, you have the freedom to report anything you like, as long as it is a fact,” he stated.

The minister also highlighted a concerning trend in contemporary journalism where headlines often misrepresent or exaggerate content to attract readers. “No matter how good the news you report is, no one will read it. The heading is very, very important now,” he said. “If you look at the reporting today, there is no relation between the heading and the content of the news.”

Media experts note that this phenomenon has accelerated as traditional news outlets compete with social media platforms for attention in an increasingly fragmented information ecosystem. The pressure to generate clicks and engagement often leads to sensationalized headlines that can contribute to misinformation.

Rymbui called for journalists to adapt to these challenges rather than succumb to them. “Let us try to be dynamic in our thought process on how to face the challenge of social media, how to face the challenge of misinformation, how to face the challenge of twisting of the facts,” he urged the gathered media professionals.

Despite celebrating the state’s press freedom, the minister acknowledged imperfections in the government-media relationship, noting occasional “disconnect” between official perspectives and ground realities reported by journalists. This candid admission reflects the ongoing tensions that exist even in relatively open media environments.

As digital transformation continues to reshape journalism globally, Rymbui’s warning that “the press fraternity will be taken over by social media, by bloggers” unless it adapts resonates with broader industry concerns about the future of professional journalism in an era of citizen reporting and algorithm-driven news consumption.
