Punjab Police Investigate Social Media Accounts for Spreading Misinformation About Chief Minister’s Helicopter

Ludhiana police have launched an investigation into several social media accounts that allegedly shared “false and misleading” information about Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s helicopter usage, according to officials. The investigation may lead to legal action against individuals operating these accounts.

This probe follows a recent case registered against ten individuals, including YouTubers, social media activists, and Right to Information (RTI) activists, who were accused of disseminating fabricated flight data related to the Chief Minister’s helicopter.

Vaibhav Sehgal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) for the cybercrime cell, revealed that the investigation began after receiving intelligence from the state cyber cell in Mohali. The information pointed to a resident of the Focal Point area in Ludhiana who allegedly created a fake Facebook profile under the name “Deep Mangli” to spread unverified and misleading content.

“Acting on this information, we initiated a thorough investigation and registered a formal case against the individual,” Sehgal stated. “The accused attempted to portray alleged misuse of state resources by sharing what they claimed was flight data of the Chief Minister’s helicopter. However, our investigation determined these claims were entirely fabricated.”

The police investigation concluded that the misleading information was deliberately shared to damage the reputation of the Punjab government. According to the ADCP, the scope of the investigation has now widened to include numerous other social media profiles that helped propagate these fake videos.

“Many social media accounts have shared this misinformation, and they are all now under scrutiny,” Sehgal explained. “Sharing such misleading content constitutes a criminal offense. Once we identify the owners of these accounts, appropriate legal action will be taken against them.”

The spread of misinformation on social media platforms has become an increasing concern for law enforcement agencies across India, particularly when it involves government officials or public resources. Such cases highlight the challenges authorities face in combating digital misinformation that can rapidly spread and potentially impact public perception.

While addressing media queries, Sehgal confirmed that no arrests had been made in the case so far, suggesting that the investigation remains in its early stages. He emphasized that digital forensics teams are working to trace the origins of the false information and identify all individuals involved in its creation and dissemination.

The ADCP also took the opportunity to issue a public advisory, urging citizens to verify information before sharing it on social media platforms. “In today’s digital age, it’s crucial that people fact-check information before amplifying it online,” Sehgal noted. “Sharing unverified information, especially that which makes serious allegations against public figures, can have legal consequences.”

This case comes amid growing concerns about the proliferation of fake news and misinformation in India, particularly on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Government officials have increasingly found themselves targets of misinformation campaigns that can spread rapidly through social media networks.

The Punjab government has previously expressed concerns about targeted misinformation affecting public trust in institutions. This investigation appears to be part of broader efforts to address digital misinformation that authorities believe could undermine public confidence in elected officials or government operations.

As the investigation continues, police officials have indicated they will provide updates on any significant developments or arrests related to the case.
