Kelantan Police Investigate Misinformation in College Student Murder Case

Police in Kelantan have launched a dual investigation into both the brutal murder of a 19-year-old college student and the spread of false information about the case that has proliferated across social media platforms.

The victim was discovered in Ketereh last Friday with 61 stab wounds, according to police reports. Initially found without identification, authorities later confirmed her identity through fingerprint verification with the National Registration Department.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat announced that an investigation into the spread of misinformation is being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which govern the distribution of statements conducive to public mischief and improper use of network facilities, respectively.

“We are taking this matter very seriously due to the circulation of social media posts containing various unverified information and facts regarding the case,” Mamat said in an official statement. He specifically highlighted content that included speculation about suspects’ backgrounds and unauthorized use of his official photograph to attract attention.

Particularly concerning to authorities has been the misappropriation of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) official logo, which Mamat noted “gives the impression that the content was an official police statement.” This unauthorized use of official symbols has the potential to mislead the public and lend credibility to unverified claims.

The police have warned that the proliferation of false information poses significant risks to both public order and the integrity of the ongoing murder investigation. A formal police report has been filed regarding the misinformation, and authorities are actively pursuing those responsible.

In a related development, Kota Bharu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azmir Damiri has explicitly refuted viral claims suggesting the father of a teenage male suspect in custody is a retired police officer with influential connections.

“What has gone viral claiming that he is a retired police officer and that there is a ‘big connection’ is completely untrue,” Damiri stated when contacted about the rumors. He clarified that the suspect’s father is actually a retiree from another government agency entirely, with no connection to law enforcement.

The spread of such misinformation reflects growing concerns about the role of social media in high-profile criminal cases, where unverified claims can rapidly reach thousands of users before authorities have the opportunity to respond.

Malaysia has seen an increase in cases involving online misinformation in recent years, leading to stricter enforcement of relevant laws. The Communications and Multimedia Act, in particular, carries potential penalties of up to one year imprisonment and fines for those convicted of spreading false content online.

Law enforcement officials have urged the public to exercise caution when encountering information about the case on social media platforms. “The public is advised to be more responsible when using social media and not to spread false information,” Mamat emphasized in his statement.

The homicide investigation continues as authorities work to gather evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death. The case has drawn significant attention throughout Kelantan and beyond, highlighting the challenges police face in managing both a complex murder investigation and the accompanying information ecosystem.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation into this case and hope that the public will not casually upload or share inaccurate information,” Damiri added, underscoring the potential impact of misinformation on both the investigation and public confidence in law enforcement.

As both investigations proceed, police have committed to providing accurate updates to counter the spread of rumors and speculation surrounding the tragic case.
