Mumbai Police Refutes Social Media Rumors About Missing Children Cases
Mumbai Police issued a stern warning on Friday against what they describe as “misrepresentation of data and rumor-mongering” on social media platforms regarding cases of missing and kidnapped children in the city.
In a statement posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the police categorically denied claims circulating online about an alleged spike in child abductions. The authorities made it clear they intend to take legal action against individuals spreading false information.
“Certain social media handles are misrepresenting data and indulging in rumour-mongering regarding cases of missing and kidnapped children. We categorically deny these claims,” the Mumbai Police stated, adding that they plan to register First Information Reports (FIRs) against those deliberately circulating misinformation.
This intervention comes amid growing concern about the spread of unverified information on social media platforms, particularly regarding sensitive issues like child safety. In recent weeks, several viral posts have claimed a dramatic increase in child disappearances across Mumbai, sparking panic among parents and residents.
Law enforcement experts point out that false information about missing children can lead to unnecessary public anxiety and divert police resources from actual investigations. Former Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, who now works as a security consultant, told reporters, “Misinformation campaigns can create panic and actually hamper genuine police work by flooding helplines with false reports.”
The Mumbai Police department has been increasingly active in monitoring social media platforms for potentially harmful content. Last year, the department established a dedicated cyber cell to track and counter misinformation, particularly around issues that could trigger public unrest.
According to official statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau, while child disappearance cases remain a serious concern nationwide, there has been no unusual spike in Mumbai during the past quarter. The city has maintained relatively stable numbers compared to previous years, with a slight decrease in reported cases during the last six months.
Child rights activists, while welcoming the police clarification, emphasize that even a single missing child case deserves serious attention. Priti Patkar, founder of Prerana, an NGO working with vulnerable children in Mumbai, said, “While countering misinformation is important, we must not lose sight of the fact that child trafficking and missing children remain serious issues requiring consistent vigilance.”
The Mumbai Police department has urged citizens to verify information through official channels before sharing content on social media. They have also provided a dedicated helpline (022-22625020) for reporting suspicious activities related to child safety, emphasizing that timely and accurate reporting helps them respond more effectively to genuine cases.
Digital rights advocate Apar Gupta noted that this incident highlights the larger problem of misinformation in India’s digital landscape. “The speed at which unverified information spreads on platforms like WhatsApp and X creates significant challenges for law enforcement. There’s an urgent need for digital literacy programs alongside enforcement measures,” Gupta explained.
The police warning comes at a time when several Indian states are strengthening laws against digital misinformation. Maharashtra state government recently announced plans to introduce more stringent penalties for those deliberately spreading false information that could cause public panic or distress.
For parents concerned about child safety, the police have recommended following verified safety protocols, including maintaining updated photographs of children, teaching them about personal safety, and immediately reporting any suspicious incidents through official channels rather than relying on unverified social media alerts.
Authorities have promised to provide regular updates on missing persons cases through their official channels to ensure transparency and maintain public trust.
