Pakistan Intensifies Efforts to Combat Cyber Threats and Misinformation

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced Thursday that authorities have identified numerous fake social media accounts during recent operations targeting cyber crimes across the country.

Speaking at a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) event, Tarar emphasized that the government is strengthening the National Cyber Security Policy to address growing digital threats. “Cyber security is a major challenge, and the government is prepared to confront it,” he stated.

The minister detailed ongoing measures to enhance Pakistan’s cyber security infrastructure, noting that the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is actively monitoring and responding to cyber attacks. These efforts come amid increasing concerns about data protection and digital security in the rapidly evolving technological landscape of Pakistan.

Tarar highlighted the importance of public awareness and training in preventing cyber attacks, revealing that several illegal networks have been exposed during recent cyber crime operations. He referenced global leaders at the World Economic Forum who have identified misinformation as one of the most significant challenges facing societies worldwide.

The minister specifically mentioned the spread of fake news on social media following an incident in Sydney, though he did not provide further details about the event. He also claimed that an unnamed media outlet continues to make accusations against Pakistan, suggesting a pattern of information warfare targeting the country.

“A national-level cyber security awareness campaign will be launched to prevent data leaks,” Tarar announced, adding that his ministry has established a digital communication department to implement strategic measures against fake news. “More measures will be required to end mass misinformation,” he warned.

Tarar stressed the need for balanced approaches to emerging technologies while promoting responsible social media use, particularly given Pakistan’s ongoing challenges with terrorism.

At the same event, PTA Chairman Major General Hafeezur Rehman (retired) assured attendees that Pakistan has developed a robust cyber security system with effective protective measures implemented across the telecom sector. However, he expressed concern about excessive time spent on social media by citizens and the prevalence of cyber fraud.

“Cyber fraud affects someone every day,” Rehman noted, pointing to specific schemes where WhatsApp accounts are hacked and used to demand money from victims’ contacts. He emphasized that while digitization offers numerous benefits, it also introduces significant risks that require public awareness to maintain trust in digital systems.

The PTA had previously issued an advisory on Wednesday urging social media users to protect their digital footprint. The authority warned that every online action—including posts, shares, and searches—becomes part of a user’s digital identity, potentially affecting privacy and security in the long term.

Pakistan’s renewed focus on cyber security comes amid growing global concerns about digital threats, particularly in developing economies where rapid technology adoption often outpaces security infrastructure. The country has faced challenges related to misinformation campaigns, data breaches, and digital fraud in recent years, prompting authorities to develop more comprehensive strategies for cyber defense.

The government’s initiative represents part of a broader effort to modernize Pakistan’s approach to information security while balancing the benefits of digital transformation with necessary safeguards for citizens and critical infrastructure.
