In a swift response to the spread of misinformation, Madhura Nagar police have filed charges against multiple social media users for disseminating false information about electoral rolls, officials confirmed Thursday.

The legal action stems from a formal complaint lodged by Syed Yahiya Kamal, who serves as the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer for the Jubilee Hills Assembly Constituency and Assistant Municipal Commissioner of Yousufguda Circle–19 within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

According to investigating officers, the accused individuals allegedly created and shared fabricated posts claiming that several film actresses appeared in electoral rolls with manipulated addresses, altered photographs, and invalid Electronic Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers. These false claims had begun gaining traction across various social media platforms in recent days.

The timing of these allegations is particularly sensitive as the region prepares for upcoming elections. Electoral integrity experts note that such misinformation could potentially undermine public confidence in the electoral process if left unchecked.

“This type of targeted misinformation about electoral rolls represents a serious concern for democratic processes,” said Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a political analyst specializing in Indian electoral systems. “False claims about celebrity voters can generate significant engagement online and spread rapidly, creating confusion among legitimate voters.”

The film industry holds considerable cultural influence in the region, particularly in Hyderabad, which houses the prominent Telugu cinema industry. The alleged targeting of actresses in these false claims appears calculated to attract maximum attention and shares across social platforms.

Police officials declined to name the specific individuals charged or the actresses whose identities were allegedly misused in the false posts, citing the ongoing investigation. Authorities confirmed they are working to determine the original sources of the misinformation and whether the campaign was coordinated.

The Electoral Commission has increasingly prioritized combating digital misinformation in recent years, as social media has become a key battleground for election-related information and disinformation. During the 2024 national elections, officials documented a significant rise in electoral misinformation cases compared to previous election cycles.

In response to this incident, election officials have issued a public advisory urging citizens to refrain from believing or sharing unverified information about electoral rolls. They emphasized that official electoral information should only be obtained through authorized government channels.

“We take the integrity of the electoral rolls extremely seriously,” said a senior election commission representative who requested anonymity as they weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter. “Tampering with voter information, even through false social media posts, undermines the democratic process and will not be tolerated.”

Officials have warned that those found spreading false or misleading content that could influence the election process will face strict legal action. Under Indian law, individuals found guilty of deliberate election-related misinformation can face penalties including fines and imprisonment.

Digital rights advocates have noted the case highlights the complex balance between combating harmful misinformation and protecting free speech online.

The investigation continues as authorities work to trace the digital footprints of the misleading posts. Law enforcement officials have indicated that additional charges may follow as the investigation develops, particularly if evidence emerges of coordinated efforts to undermine electoral processes.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has ramped up its social media monitoring ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle, deploying specialized teams to identify and counter misinformation in real-time across major platforms.
