Viral Bear Cub Rescue Video Exposed as AI-Generated Fake

A widely circulated video purportedly showing a Russian-speaking man rescuing a bear cub clinging to a drifting tree trunk has been confirmed to be entirely fabricated using artificial intelligence technology.

The video, which garnered millions of views across social media platforms in November, depicts a dramatic scene where a man in a small motorboat approaches what appears to be a stranded bear cub before seemingly bringing it to safety. The clip was shared extensively, with one post by X user @Gabriele_Corno alone accumulating over 3 million views before the account’s privacy settings were changed.

Digital forensics investigators quickly identified several telltale signs of AI manipulation. Most notably, the man in the video wears watches on both wrists—an unusual detail that would be impractical in real life. Additionally, the boat’s movement appears physically implausible, as the man never reaches back far enough to control the motor despite the boat accelerating and braking throughout the rescue attempt.

The origin of the fake footage was traced to the Russian-language YouTube channel @pandavt, which posted the video on October 20 with English-language audio. That original post has accumulated approximately 9 million views. Tellingly, the video’s description contained an automated attribution to OpenAI, specifically crediting the company’s Sora 2 text-to-video generation model released in late September 2025.

This bear rescue video represents just one example of a growing trend of hyper-realistic AI-generated content designed to elicit emotional responses from viewers. The same YouTube channel hosts numerous other fabricated videos showing similar human-animal interactions, including additional scenarios with bear cubs and tigers, all featuring the same inauthentic English-language voiceovers.

Media analysis experts note that the exact 15-second duration of these videos aligns perfectly with the technical limitations of Sora 2’s standard user tier, which restricts video generation to precisely that length. The platform’s premium “Pro” subscription, priced at $200, allows for slightly longer 25-second clips.

“This case highlights the increasing sophistication of AI-generated content,” says Dr. Elena Markova, a digital media researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. “What’s concerning is how these videos target our emotional responses to animals in distress, making viewers more likely to share without questioning authenticity.”

As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, media literacy experts recommend that viewers approach emotionally compelling videos with healthy skepticism, particularly when they lack contextual information about filming location, date, or the individuals involved.
