Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a symbolic visit to the frontline city of Kupiansk on Friday, directly challenging Russian claims that their forces had captured the strategic eastern Ukrainian city.

In a video shared on social media, Zelenskyy appeared in combat gear standing in front of a damaged Kupiansk city sign. “Today, I am in the Kupiansk sector, with our warriors who are getting the job done for Ukraine here,” Zelenskyy stated. “The Russians kept going on about Kupiansk – the reality speaks for itself. I visited our troops and congratulated them.”

The Ukrainian leader’s defiant appearance contradicts Russian assertions from November, when Russian state media outlet Tass reported that their forces had “liberated” Kupiansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. At that time, Russia’s Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov had briefed President Vladimir Putin about the supposed military achievement.

Kupiansk holds significant strategic importance in eastern Ukraine as a transportation hub in the Kharkiv region. The city has changed hands multiple times during the nearly three-year conflict and continues to be a focal point of intense fighting along the eastern front.

Zelenskyy’s frontline visit comes at a crucial diplomatic juncture. His negotiating team is preparing for talks on Sunday in Berlin with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and former presidential advisor Jared Kushner to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. These negotiations represent a key step in the ongoing efforts to establish parameters for a potential peace agreement.

“We are focusing on how to reliably guarantee Ukraine’s security so that the experience of the Budapest Memorandum and Russia’s invasion are never repeated. We are counting on constructive talks,” Zelenskyy commented on social media, referencing the 1994 agreement in which Ukraine surrendered its nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances that failed to prevent Russia’s 2022 invasion.

The Ukrainian president is also expected to meet with European leaders to discuss a broader political framework to end the conflict and secure long-term protection for Ukraine, along with plans for postwar reconstruction and development.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized that any sustainable ceasefire must include firm security guarantees and protect European interests. Merz warned that peace cannot come at the expense of the European Union or NATO, nor without their participation in negotiations, highlighting European concerns about being sidelined in U.S.-brokered talks.

These diplomatic developments unfold against a backdrop of growing regional tension. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte recently warned alliance members that they could be Russia’s next target if Ukraine falls. Speaking at a Munich Security Conference event in Germany, Rutte urged NATO countries to increase defense spending and production.

“I fear that too many are quietly complacent. Too many don’t feel the urgency. And too many believe that time is on our side. It is not. The time for action is now,” Rutte cautioned, suggesting Moscow could potentially use military force against NATO within five years.

The NATO chief’s stark warning comes as military analysts assess Russia’s ongoing rearmament efforts and battlefield adaptations in Ukraine. Defense experts have noted Russia’s increased weapons production and deepening military partnerships with countries like North Korea and Iran.

As Ukraine approaches the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February, the conflict continues to exact a heavy humanitarian toll. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians have been killed, with millions displaced from their homes in what has become Europe’s largest land war since World War II.
