Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed interest in securing decades-long security guarantees from the United States, following his recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Florida. According to a post on Zelenskyy’s social media account, Trump has committed to presenting such guarantees to the U.S. Congress for consideration.

The high-stakes meeting, which took place on Sunday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, came as Ukraine continues its struggle in a protracted conflict with Russia that has devastated large portions of the country and created one of Europe’s worst humanitarian crises since World War II.

“He confirmed the details that had been developed up to this point by our negotiating teams regarding these security guarantees, and he confirmed that they would be put to a vote by the United States Congress. This is a very strong agreement,” Zelenskyy wrote in a follow-up post on Monday.

The Ukrainian leader further elaborated on the timeframe for these proposed security guarantees, noting that current documentation sets the guarantees for 15 years with the possibility of extension. However, Zelenskyy indicated he pushed for a much longer commitment during his discussions with Trump.

“I told him that our war has already been going on for more than a decade, and therefore, we would very much like the guarantees to last longer. We would like to consider the possibility of 30, 40, or 50 years. It would then become a historic decision by President Trump,” Zelenskyy explained.

According to the Ukrainian president, Trump said the U.S. would consider the extended timeframe request.

During a joint press conference on Sunday, President Trump confirmed he had offered security assurances to Ukraine, though he emphasized that European nations would shoulder a significant portion of the responsibility. “I did. We wanna work with Europe,” Trump stated, adding that Europe will “take over a big part of it” while the United States provides assistance.

The meeting represents a significant diplomatic effort by the U.S. administration to broker peace in a conflict that has raged since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, following years of tensions that began with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Security guarantees have been a central concern for Ukraine, which has consistently sought robust international commitments to protect against future Russian aggression. Without such guarantees, Ukrainian officials have expressed concern that any peace agreement might simply provide Russia with time to rearm and prepare for future military actions.

The proposed long-term security arrangement would require Congressional approval, potentially setting up a complex legislative battle. Some members of Congress have already expressed reservations about extended U.S. commitments abroad. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene publicly criticized Trump’s meetings with both Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, questioning whether these international engagements align with America-first priorities.

Military and security experts note that the specifics of any security guarantees—including what military support might be provided, intelligence sharing protocols, and potential troop commitments—will be crucial in determining their effectiveness. These details have not yet been made public.

The war in Ukraine has already cost thousands of lives, displaced millions of people, and required billions of dollars in international aid. While Trump has expressed optimism about potential peace negotiations, stating the talks between Russia and Ukraine are in their “final stages,” significant obstacles remain.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the proposed security guarantees or their potential duration.
