Global Powers React Cautiously to US-Israeli Strikes on Iran Amid Reports of Khamenei’s Death

The reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran have prompted cautious responses from world leaders as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s death on social media, calling it “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country.” Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday that the 86-year-old leader had died without specifying the cause, while Israeli officials told The Associated Press anonymously that Khamenei was killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later stated in a televised address that there were “growing signs” Khamenei had been killed when Israel struck his compound early Saturday.

The apparent demise of the Islamic Republic’s second leader, who had no designated successor, creates significant uncertainty about Iran’s future governance and raises concerns about further regional instability. In response, the U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting.

Following the U.S. and Israeli attacks, Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones toward Israel and American military bases throughout the Middle East. Trump used the moment to call on Iranians to “seize control of your destiny” by rising up against the Islamic regime that has ruled the country since 1979.

International reactions have been measured, with many nations avoiding direct comments on the joint strikes while condemning Iran’s retaliatory actions. European powers and Middle Eastern countries have largely maintained this careful balance, condemning Iran’s attacks on neighboring Arab states while remaining notably silent about the U.S. and Israeli military operations.

Leaders from Britain, France, and Germany issued a joint statement calling for the resumption of diplomatic talks. “We condemn Iranian attacks on countries in the region in the strongest terms. Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military strikes,” they said. “Ultimately, the Iranian people must be allowed to determine their future.”

The statement emphasized that these European powers did not participate in the strikes but remain in close contact with the U.S., Israel, and regional partners. These three nations have previously led efforts to negotiate solutions regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

French President Emmanuel Macron later clarified that France was “neither warned nor involved” in the strikes and called for intensified diplomatic efforts, saying “no one can think that the questions of Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic activity, regional destabilization will be settled by strikes alone.”

The 22-nation Arab League condemned the Iranian attacks as “a blatant violation of the sovereignty of countries that advocate for peace and strive for stability.” Individual Arab nations including Morocco, Jordan, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates denounced Iranian strikes targeting U.S. military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE.

Saudi Arabia issued a particularly strong statement, denouncing “the treacherous Iranian aggression and the blatant violation of sovereignty.” Even Syria, traditionally one of Iran’s closest regional allies, singularly condemned Iran’s actions, reflecting the new government’s efforts to rebuild ties with regional economic powers and the United States.

Russia and China offered more explicit criticism of the U.S. and Israeli actions. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called the strikes “a pre-planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent U.N. member state,” accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of pursuing regime change under the guise of concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.

China expressed similar sentiments, saying it was “highly concerned” about the strikes and calling for an immediate halt to military action. “Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said.

Despite recent tensions with the United States, Canada expressed support for the military action. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East.”

The situation has created palpable nervousness across multiple countries. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that he was concerned the failure of U.S.-Iran negotiations could lead to a “new, extensive war in the Middle East.”

As the situation continues to develop, many international organizations are calling for restraint. The EU issued a joint statement urging all parties to engage in regional diplomacy “to ensure nuclear safety,” while the Arab League appealed for de-escalation “to spare the region the scourge of instability and violence, and to return to dialogue.”
