Theme Park Maintenance Worker Dies in Tragic Tokyo Dome City Attraction Accident

A 24-year-old maintenance worker died Tuesday after becoming trapped in the mechanism of a ride at Tokyo Dome City Attractions, park officials confirmed. Kamimura Hina was conducting routine maintenance on the “Flying Balloon” attraction when the fatal accident occurred.

According to local media outlet NHK World Japan, Kamimura was part of a six-person team performing a monthly inspection of the ride. The seats of the attraction had been raised to allow workers access to the mechanisms when they suddenly fell, trapping Kamimura against the central pillar. She had reportedly been working on a stepladder at the time of the incident.

Rescue personnel worked for approximately five hours to free the young worker from the machinery. Despite their efforts, Kamimura was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

“During routine maintenance work on the ride, one of our employees became trapped within the ride’s gondola mechanism,” Tokyo Dome City Attractions said in a statement. “Following rescue operations, the employee was transported to a hospital, where their death was subsequently confirmed.”

The “Flying Balloon” is a popular attraction at the Tokyo theme park that features 12 seats arranged in a circle around a central pillar. During operation, these seats rotate and rise along the structure to a height of approximately 30 feet, providing riders with an aerial experience.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about amusement park safety protocols, particularly during maintenance operations when rides may be partially disassembled or in unusual configurations. Theme park maintenance work often involves unique hazards as technicians must navigate complex mechanical systems while working at heights.

In response to the tragedy, Tokyo Dome City Attractions has suspended operations at all attractions throughout the park until further notice. The company stated it is conducting “a full-scale investigation into the cause of the accident in coordination with relevant authorities, including police and the fire department.”

Tokyo Dome City, located adjacent to the Tokyo Dome stadium in central Tokyo, is one of the capital’s popular entertainment destinations, featuring numerous rides and attractions. The park typically draws thousands of visitors daily, making safety concerns particularly pressing.

Industry experts note that while Japan’s amusement parks generally maintain high safety standards, this incident underscores the inherent risks associated with complex mechanical rides, even during non-operational periods. In recent years, there has been increasing scrutiny of maintenance practices at theme parks worldwide following several high-profile accidents.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation to determine whether proper safety protocols were followed during the maintenance procedure and if any mechanical failures contributed to the accident.

“We offer our deepest prayers for the repose of the deceased employee’s soul, and we extend our profound condolences and apologies to their bereaved family,” the company said in their statement. “We also wish to offer our sincere apologies once again to all customers and stakeholders who have been inconvenienced and caused anxiety as a result of this accident.”

The incident comes as Japan’s theme park industry has been working to recover from pandemic-related closures and reduced attendance. Tokyo Dome City Attractions has not yet indicated when the park might reopen or what additional safety measures might be implemented following their investigation.

Workplace safety advocates are likely to closely monitor the findings of the investigation, as they may have implications for maintenance procedures at amusement parks not only in Japan but globally.
