Escaped Wolf Captured After Nine-Day Adventure in South Korea

A two-year-old wolf that escaped from a South Korean zoo nine days ago has been safely captured and returned, ending a saga that captivated the nation and drew international attention.

Neukgu, born in captivity in 2024, burrowed his way out of the O-World zoo and theme park in Daejeon, south of Seoul, on April 8. The escape triggered an extensive search operation that kept South Koreans on edge, particularly given the memory of a puma named Bbo-rong that was shot and killed hours after escaping from the same facility eight years ago.

The wolf was finally captured just after midnight on Friday when a veterinarian successfully tranquilized him. Zoo officials reported that while his vital signs were normal following a health check, they had to remove a fish hook from his stomach.

“I’m grateful for everyone involved in bringing Neukgu back safely,” Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo wrote on Facebook, pledging to “prepare measures for animal welfare and civil safety in the process of reorganizing the zoo.”

During his time on the loose, Neukgu was spotted multiple times on surveillance cameras and was seen near a highway nearly three miles from the zoo. The search operation deployed sophisticated technology, including drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras, but the wolf managed to evade an earlier capture attempt when he escaped a perimeter set up on a mountain near the zoo.

Neukgu’s significance extends beyond his brief adventure. He represents the third generation of wolves brought to South Korea from Russia as part of a breeding program to reintroduce an animal similar to the Korean wolf, which went extinct in the wild during the 1960s. Conservation experts consider these breeding programs crucial for preserving genetic diversity and potentially reintroducing endangered species to their native habitats.

The escape sparked widespread public interest, with many South Koreans becoming emotionally invested in Neukgu’s welfare. Some affectionately dubbed him an “honorary ambassador for the zoo,” and his notoriety even inspired a cryptocurrency meme named after him. Following his rescue, social media lit up with messages of relief, with users writing “welcome back” and “Neukgu, it’s dangerous outside the house.”

The incident prompted South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to address the situation publicly. “Currently, the police, fire services, and military are mobilizing their full resources to ensure a safe capture and return,” he wrote on social platform X during the search. “I sincerely hope that no casualties occur, and I pray that Neukgu, too, returns safely and unharmed.”

The O-World facility remains closed following Neukgu’s return as it faces scrutiny after a series of animal escapes. A nearby elementary school had also briefly suspended operations for safety reasons during the wolf’s time on the loose.

Lee Kwan Jong, director of O-World, said Neukgu will be kept separate from other animals until he has fully recovered from his adventure. The director added that the wolf’s health will take precedence over reopening plans as zoo officials review and enhance their security measures.

The successful resolution stands in stark contrast to similar incidents worldwide, where escaped predators are often killed due to public safety concerns. Animal welfare advocates are likely to point to Neukgu’s safe return as a model for how such situations can be handled humanely while still protecting public safety.
