Champagne Flares Sparked Deadly Alpine Resort Fire, Swiss Officials Say

Swiss investigators believe sparkling flares attached to Champagne bottles ignited the devastating fire that ripped through a crowded bar at the Crans-Montana ski resort, killing 40 people and injuring 119 others during New Year’s celebrations.

The deadly blaze swept through Le Constellation bar in southwestern Switzerland in the early hours of Thursday, transforming a night of celebration into one of the nation’s worst peacetime tragedies. Many of the injured suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation, with several victims airlifted to specialized treatment centers across Europe.

Valais canton Attorney General Béatrice Pilloud announced Friday that the investigation will examine safety measures at the establishment, including fire extinguishers, escape routes, and regulatory compliance. Authorities will also scrutinize the bar’s license, maximum capacity, and whether sparklers were permitted for use inside the venue.

“If individuals are found responsible and are still alive, an investigation will be opened against them for negligent arson, negligent homicide, and negligent bodily harm,” Pilloud stated during a press conference.

Investigators described the fire as a probable “flashover” — a phenomenon where accumulated combustible gases suddenly ignite, causing a rapid and violent spread of flames. Witnesses told French broadcaster BFMTV they saw a male bartender lifting a female colleague on his shoulders as she held a lit candle in a bottle moments before flames erupted and the wooden ceiling collapsed.

The layout of the establishment contributed to the high casualty count. Survivors described a chaotic scene as patrons from the nightclub area in the basement attempted to flee up a narrow staircase through a single door, creating a deadly bottleneck. Some desperately smashed windows to escape the rapidly spreading fire.

Gianni Campolo, a 19-year-old Swiss vacationer who rushed to help first responders after receiving a call from a friend who escaped, described a horrific scene. “I have seen horror and I don’t know what else would be worse than this,” he told French broadcaster TF1, recounting how he found severely burned victims trapped on the ground.

The regional hospital in Sion, about 10 kilometers from the resort, quickly reached capacity after receiving approximately 80 seriously injured patients within just three hours. Despite being well-staffed for the holiday season and reinforced by off-duty personnel who voluntarily reported to work, the facility was overwhelmed by the sudden influx of casualties. As of Friday, the hospital was still treating about 30 patients with serious injuries.

The severity of burns has hampered victim identification, prolonging the anguish for families now providing DNA samples to authorities. In many cases, identification documents were destroyed in the intense heat.

Among those missing is Emanuele Galeppini, a promising 17-year-old Italian golfer who competed internationally. His uncle told Italian news agency ANSA that the family awaits DNA confirmation, though the Italian Golf Federation has already announced his death on its website.

Italy’s foreign minister reported 13 Italian citizens injured and six missing. France’s foreign ministry confirmed eight French nationals missing and nine injured, including 19-year-old FC Metz trainee player Tahirys Dos Santos, who suffered severe burns and has been transferred to Germany for specialized treatment.

The injured include 71 Swiss nationals, along with citizens from France, Italy, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal and Poland. The nationalities of 14 victims remain unclear.

Crans-Montana, nestled in the heart of the Valais region with high-altitude ski runs rising around 3,000 meters, is one of the premier venues on the World Cup circuit. The resort is scheduled to host top male and female downhill racers for their final events before the Milan Cortina Olympics in February. Its Crans-sur-Sierre golf club, located near the bar, hosts the European Masters each August.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution in the coming days to avoid incidents that might further strain the region’s already overwhelmed medical resources as the investigation into this catastrophic fire continues.
