Tragedy Strikes Remote Canadian Town: 10 Dead in School and Home Shootings

In a devastating incident that has shocked Canada, ten people are dead and more than 25 others wounded after shootings at a secondary school and a residential home in the remote northern British Columbia town of Tumbler Ridge.

The rampage, which unfolded Tuesday, saw seven victims killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, with authorities confirming that two more bodies were discovered at a nearby residence. The suspected shooter, identified only as a woman, was also found dead from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted wound.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded swiftly, arriving at the school within two minutes of being alerted to the emergency. Upon arrival, officers discovered six people dead and more than 25 wounded, with two victims in life-threatening condition. A seventh victim died while being transported to hospital.

The incident marks Canada’s deadliest mass shooting since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that claimed nine additional lives.

Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit community of approximately 2,700 residents nestled in the Canadian Rockies, sits more than 600 miles northeast of Vancouver near the Alberta provincial border. The secondary school targeted in the attack serves 175 students from Grades 7 through 12.

“I broke down,” said Mayor Darryl Krakowka, visibly emotional when addressing reporters. “I have lived here for 18 years. I probably know every one of the victims.” The mayor characterized the community as a “big family,” underscoring the profound impact this tragedy will have on the small town.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene as students evacuated the building with hands raised while police vehicles surrounded the school and a helicopter circled overhead.

Authorities have identified a female suspect but have not released her name or age to the public. Investigators stated they are still working to determine the motive behind the attack and the connection between the shooter and the victims. The relationship between the school shooting and the deaths at the nearby residence remains under investigation.

The attack prompted Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend a planned trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Munich, Germany. In a statement posted to social media, Carney expressed his devastation over the incident.

“I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” the Prime Minister wrote.

The shooting comes despite Canada’s relatively strict gun control laws, which have been progressively tightened in response to previous mass casualty events. Following the 2020 Nova Scotia shooting, the Canadian government banned more than 2,500 makes and models of assault-style firearms. In October 2022, a national freeze on the sale and purchase of handguns took effect.

The country has also implemented compensation programs to reduce the number of prohibited weapons in circulation. Between November 2024 and April 2025, more than 12,000 assault-style weapons were collected and destroyed through a business compensation program. A similar initiative for individual gun owners launched last month, allowing civilians to voluntarily surrender banned weapons in exchange for compensation until March 31.

Gun owners who choose not to participate in the buyback program must dispose of or permanently deactivate their prohibited firearms before an amnesty period ends on October 30.

As the investigation continues, the community of Tumbler Ridge and the entire nation face the difficult task of processing this tragedy and supporting those affected by the violence. Mental health resources have been mobilized to assist students, families, and first responders dealing with trauma from the incident.
