Survivors and families of victims are demanding answers after a deadly train crash in southern Mexico killed 13 people and injured nearly 110 others on Sunday. The Interoceanic Train, carrying 250 passengers, derailed near a curve in Oaxaca state while traveling on a rail line connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday she was heading to the region to oversee the government’s response. “Our first priority is taking care of the victims,” she stated. “The second is to rigorously investigate what caused this accident.”

The president insisted that the train and infrastructure had been working correctly prior to the accident, cautioning against speculation about the cause while investigators conduct their work.

Dramatic videos from the crash site show several train cars that had plummeted off a steep hillside into dense jungle below, while others lay toppled on their sides along the tracks. The derailment occurred as the train passed through El Espinal, a small town in Oaxaca state.

For families of the victims, the aftermath has been marked by confusion and heartbreak. Hector Serrano Garcia, whose 15-year-old daughter Luisa was killed in the crash, gathered with relatives at a small funeral home in Oaxaca, overcome with grief. Luisa’s grandmother Carmen García, who was also on the train, had desperately pleaded on social media Sunday night for help locating her granddaughter before the family received the tragic news of her death on Monday.

“We’ve had very little information,” Serrano Garcia said. “It’s been incredibly hard for all the families.”

Some survivors have raised questions about the train’s speed before the accident. Baldo Enríquez Antonio reported that his wife Ana Guadalupe Fabre and their 16-year-old son, both passengers returning to Veracruz after Christmas celebrations in Oaxaca, told him the train “was going very fast on the curves.” His wife suffered several broken ribs in the crash, while their son sustained leg injuries and a gash on his forehead. Despite his own injuries, the teenage boy managed to pull his mother from their toppled train car.

When asked about reports regarding the train’s speed, President Sheinbaum acknowledged seeing survivor videos mentioning this factor but warned against speculation, emphasizing the need to “let the prosecutors do their job.”

The rail line has been controversial since its inauguration in 2023 by then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The project was part of his administration’s ambitious push to expand railway connectivity in rural areas of Mexico. Critics have noted that many infrastructure projects under López Obrador were constructed hastily, often bypassing regulatory requirements and environmental impact studies.

The Interoceanic Train line represents a significant transportation link between two major waterways, connecting the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz. It was designed to improve mobility and economic development in a region where transportation infrastructure has historically been underdeveloped.

The derailment raises serious questions about safety standards and operational protocols on Mexico’s expanding railway network. Rail accidents in Mexico have been relatively rare in recent years, making Sunday’s deadly crash particularly concerning for transportation officials and the public.

Government investigators are now tasked with determining whether the accident resulted from mechanical failure, human error, infrastructure problems, or some combination of factors. The findings will be crucial not only for the families seeking justice but also for the future safety of Mexico’s rail transportation system.

As rescue operations concluded Monday, authorities shifted focus to providing medical care for the injured and support for the families of those who lost their lives in one of Mexico’s deadliest train accidents in recent memory.
