Venezuelan Opposition Calls on Military to Support Power Transition Following Maduro’s Contested Victory

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for an immediate transfer of power following the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces, urging the military to recognize opposition candidate Edmundo González as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

“The hour of freedom has arrived,” Machado declared in a statement posted on social media platform X. “This is the hour of the citizens. Those of us who risked everything for democracy on July 28th.” She called on Venezuela’s armed forces to acknowledge González as the rightful president and their commander-in-chief.

The dramatic developments unfolded after President Donald Trump announced that U.S. military forces had conducted “large-scale” strikes targeting the Venezuelan government and had captured Maduro and his wife. According to Trump, the couple was flown out of the country to New York to face drug trafficking charges. If confirmed, this would represent the most direct American military intervention against a Latin American head of state in decades.

As of Saturday, it remained unclear whether senior Venezuelan military commanders have shifted their allegiance or if opposition forces have secured control of state institutions. The military’s response will be crucial in determining whether a peaceful transition of power can occur.

Machado urged Venezuelan citizens to remain “vigilant, active and organized,” indicating that further instructions would come through official opposition channels. She also called on Venezuelans abroad to mobilize and pressure foreign governments to recognize a new leadership in Caracas.

The situation stems from the disputed July 28 presidential election, which both Machado and González claim was stolen. Venezuela’s electoral authorities, widely seen as aligned with Maduro, declared him the winner with approximately 52% of the vote compared to González’s 43%. However, the opposition conducted a parallel vote count that they claim shows González won by a significant margin — approximately two-thirds of the vote compared to Maduro’s 30%.

Multiple foreign governments have cited this opposition data in declining to recognize Maduro’s victory. Critics point to the government’s refusal to release detailed precinct-level data for independent verification as further evidence of election manipulation.

While González is the formal presidential candidate backed by the opposition, Machado has remained the movement’s de facto leader. She won the opposition’s primary election by a landslide before Maduro’s government barred her from running, forcing the coalition to select González as her replacement. Throughout the campaign, González publicly acknowledged Machado as the movement’s strategic leader.

The political crisis in Venezuela has been years in the making, with Maduro’s government facing accusations of human rights abuses, corruption, and economic mismanagement that has led to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the Western Hemisphere. Over 7 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2014 as hyperinflation, food shortages, and collapsing public services have made daily life untenable for many.

International reaction to the reported U.S. military action has been mixed, with some nations expressing support for democratic transition while others condemning the intervention as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
