Venezuelan authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt for individuals who supported or promoted the U.S. military operation that resulted in President Nicolás Maduro’s arrest. According to a state of emergency decree issued Saturday and published Monday, police have been ordered to “immediately begin the national search and capture of everyone involved in the promotion or support for the armed attack by the United States.”

The decree comes in the wake of Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces over the weekend, with the Venezuelan leader making his first court appearance in New York on Monday. The specific charges that could be levied against those detained under this new order remain unclear, signaling potential legal ambiguity in the government’s response.

During his court appearance, Maduro and his wife faced charges from the U.S. Justice Department for narco-terrorism and other offenses. “I am innocent. I am not guilty of anything that is written here,” Maduro declared as the charges against him were read in court.

In his absence, Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s former vice president, has been sworn in as the country’s interim president. The 56-year-old Rodríguez has been a longtime confidant and supporter of Maduro, having served as his second-in-command from 2018 until Sunday.

The arrest represents a significant geopolitical development in U.S.-Venezuelan relations, which have been strained for years under Maduro’s leadership. Venezuela, once one of Latin America’s wealthiest nations due to its vast oil reserves, has experienced severe economic collapse, widespread poverty, and humanitarian crisis during Maduro’s tenure, which began in 2013 following the death of Hugo Chávez.

Despite the Venezuelan government’s strong condemnation of the U.S. operation, Rodríguez has struck a somewhat conciliatory tone. In a Sunday social media post, she indicated that Venezuela “aspires towards balanced and respectful international relations” between Caracas and Washington. “We invite the U.S. government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation oriented towards shared development within the framework of international law to strengthen lasting community coexistence,” she wrote.

The situation has evoked divided responses within U.S. political circles. Senator John Fetterman has defended the military operation against criticism from fellow Democrats, while some Democratic lawmakers have gone so far as to label the action an “impeachable offense.”

In Caracas, government supporters have taken to the streets to protest Maduro’s detention. Images show demonstrators holding dolls from a television program called “Super Bigote,” which is based on President Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, demanding their release from U.S. custody.

The arrest comes after years of international pressure on the Maduro regime, which has been accused of election fraud, human rights abuses, and involvement in drug trafficking. The United States and dozens of other countries had previously recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s legitimate president following disputed elections in 2018, though that recognition has since been withdrawn by many nations as Maduro maintained control.

The unfolding situation raises questions about Venezuela’s political future, the legitimacy of Rodríguez’s interim government, and whether this dramatic U.S. intervention will lead to democratic reforms or further destabilize the oil-rich nation that has already seen millions of its citizens flee abroad due to economic hardship and political persecution.
