Venezuela Mobilizes Military in Response to US Naval Buildup in Caribbean

Venezuela has deployed military units and begun stockpiling weapons and equipment in response to the Trump administration’s increasing naval presence in the Caribbean, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations.

The Venezuelan mobilization, described by government officials as “prolonged resistance,” involves small military units stationed at more than 280 locations across the country. According to sources and planning documents reviewed by Reuters, these units are preparing for guerrilla tactics and potential sabotage operations should conflict arise.

“We wouldn’t last two hours in a conventional war,” a source close to the Venezuelan government told Reuters, highlighting the asymmetric nature of the country’s defense strategy against the vastly superior U.S. military capabilities.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the Trump administration of attempting to oust him from power and has pledged that Venezuelan citizens will defend their nation against what he characterizes as American aggression.

The U.S. deployment includes the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which recently entered the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility. The Pentagon has framed this naval buildup as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.

“The enhanced U.S. force presence in the USSOUTHCOM AOR will bolster U.S. capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States homeland and our security in the Western Hemisphere,” said Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell in a statement.

President Donald Trump has intensified operations targeting suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean, ordering a series of strikes aimed at curbing the flow of narcotics into the United States. In comments that have further raised concerns in Caracas, Trump suggested the possibility of ground operations in Venezuela, stating ominously that “the land is going to be next.”

The military standoff occurs against the backdrop of Venezuela’s ongoing economic and humanitarian crisis. Reports indicate that some Venezuelan military commanders have been forced to negotiate with local food producers to feed their troops due to insufficient government supplies, underscoring the country’s dire economic situation.

Russia’s foreign ministry has entered the diplomatic fray, stating last week that it stands ready to respond to Venezuela’s requests for assistance while simultaneously urging all parties to avoid escalating tensions. This statement signals Moscow’s continued support for the Maduro regime while attempting to prevent further destabilization in the region.

The confrontation represents a significant test for both administrations. For Maduro, who has maintained power despite international pressure and domestic challenges, the U.S. military presence poses perhaps the most direct external threat to his government since he assumed office. For the Trump administration, the increased naval deployment reflects a more aggressive stance toward what it views as a destabilizing regime in Venezuela and a source of narcotics trafficking affecting the United States.

When asked about intelligence matters related to the situation, a War Department official told Fox News simply, “We don’t discuss intelligence matters.”

As both nations continue their military posturing, regional observers express concerns about the potential for miscalculation that could lead to unintended conflict in an already volatile part of the Americas.
