Venezuela has condemned the United States’ seizure of an oil tanker off its coast, calling the operation an “act of international piracy” in a strongly worded diplomatic response issued Wednesday.

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly denounces and repudiates what constitutes blatant theft and an act of international piracy, publicly announced by the president of the United States, who confessed to the assault of an oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea,” the government stated in an official communiqué published by state-run news outlet Correo del Orinoco.

The Venezuelan government characterized the seizure as part of a broader campaign against the country’s sovereignty and natural resources, highlighting growing tensions between the two nations.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the operation, describing it as a joint effort involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, and the United States Coast Guard, with support from the Department of War. The mission targeted a vessel allegedly transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.

“For multiple years, the oil tanker has been sanctioned by the United States due to its involvement in an illicit oil shipping network supporting foreign terrorist organizations,” Bondi stated on social media platform X. “This seizure, completed off the coast of Venezuela, was conducted safely and securely—and our investigation alongside the Department of Homeland Security to prevent the transport of sanctioned oil continues.”

Dramatic footage of the operation released by Bondi shows a helicopter approaching the vessel and tactical personnel rappelling onto the deck with weapons drawn. The images reveal U.S. forces methodically securing the tanker in what represents a significant escalation in enforcement of sanctions against Venezuela’s oil industry.

President Donald Trump personally announced the seizure during a White House roundtable event with business leaders on Wednesday, emphasizing the scale of the operation. “As you probably know, we’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela. A large tanker, very large, largest one ever seized actually,” Trump told reporters.

When asked about the fate of the oil aboard the seized vessel, Trump responded with characteristic bluntness: “Well, we keep it, I guess,” later adding, “I assume we’re going to keep the oil.”

The seizure marks a notable intensification in the enforcement of U.S. sanctions against Venezuela’s oil sector. Venezuela possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, but its petroleum industry has been crippled by years of mismanagement, underinvestment, and international sanctions. The country’s oil exports, once the backbone of its economy, have plummeted in recent years.

This incident occurs amid heightened U.S. military presence in the Caribbean near Venezuela. The Trump administration has recently bolstered forces in the region as part of its efforts to combat drug trafficking, though critics argue these moves are primarily meant to pressure the Venezuelan government.

The U.S. has maintained extensive sanctions against Venezuela’s oil sector since 2019, seeking to cut off financial resources to President Nicolás Maduro’s government, which Washington does not recognize as legitimate. The sanctions have contributed to Venezuela’s economic collapse but have failed to dislodge Maduro from power.

Energy analysts suggest the tanker seizure could further disrupt Venezuela’s already struggling oil exports and potentially impact global oil markets, particularly if it signals more aggressive enforcement of existing sanctions. For Venezuela, which desperately needs oil revenue to address its humanitarian crisis, the seizure represents another blow to its economic lifeline.

Neither country has indicated what diplomatic steps might follow this incident, but the forceful language used by both governments suggests relations may deteriorate further in the coming weeks.
