Ukrainian Forces Continue Strategic Strikes on Russian Territory Despite Middle East Tensions

U.S. weapons deliveries to Ukraine have continued uninterrupted despite the escalating conflict in Iran, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Thursday. In voice messages to reporters, Zelenskyy emphasized the effectiveness of Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russian oil infrastructure and manufacturing facilities.

“Of course, we are hitting what is painful for Russia, and it is very painful,” Zelenskyy stated, claiming that Russian losses from these operations have reached tens of billions of dollars. While independent verification of these figures remains challenging, Russian officials have acknowledged attacks on infrastructure located more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) inside Russian territory.

As Russia continues its invasion that began in February 2022, Ukraine has developed a two-pronged defense strategy. The Ukrainian military employs domestically produced drones and missiles to strike targets within Russia while utilizing American-made Patriot air defense systems to intercept Russian missiles targeting Ukrainian territory.

“We see that the Russians do not want to stop — they are hitting our energy sector and our people. We will respond,” Zelenskyy vowed.

Ukraine’s resistance garnered international recognition with Prince Harry arriving in Kyiv on Thursday for his third visit in a year. Reaching the capital via overnight train from Poland—currently the only available route—the Duke of Sussex praised Ukraine’s resilience at a Kyiv security conference.

“Ukraine continues to hold together, and hold together you must,” Prince Harry declared, commending Ukrainians for demonstrating “strength not just in bravery and capability, but in unity, in trust.” It remained unclear whether Prince Harry would meet with President Zelenskyy, who was scheduled to attend a European Union leaders’ summit in Cyprus that evening.

The ongoing conflict continues to inflict civilian casualties. Hours before Prince Harry’s arrival, a Russian drone attack on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro killed three people and wounded ten others, according to Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration. The strike damaged a 13-story residential building and an administrative structure.

Russian defense officials claimed their air defenses intercepted 154 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions, annexed Crimea, and waters in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea. Meanwhile, in Russia’s Krasnodar region, firefighters battled for a third consecutive day against a massive blaze at the Black Sea port of Tuapse, triggered by a Ukrainian drone strike earlier in the week.

Local authorities reported concerning environmental impacts from the Tuapse fire, with toxic materials falling with rain and coating several districts with a black layer of contaminants. Officials advised residents to remain indoors as chemical concentrations in the air exceeded permissible levels.

Ukraine’s strategic targeting of Russian energy infrastructure continued with another night of attacks in the Samara region. In Novokuybyshevsk, approximately 1,000 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border, a drone strike on an industrial facility resulted in one fatality, according to regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. Drone debris falling on a residential building in the city of Samara injured multiple people, with one requiring hospitalization.

Although unconfirmed by officials, media reports suggested the target in Novokuybyshevsk was a petrochemical plant owned by the Russian oil and gas giant Rosneft.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed strikes on Russian oil infrastructure in the Samara region and a pipeline in the Nizhegorodskaya region that transports oil from Western Siberia to Tatarstan.

A senior Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) official, speaking anonymously, revealed that Ukrainian forces had also struck the Gorky oil pumping station in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region east of Moscow. The nighttime drone attack reportedly damaged three oil tanks and ignited a large fire.

“The operation of main pipelines is disrupted, the efficiency of processing at refineries decreases, and transportation costs increase,” the official explained. “As a result, this directly affects the revenues of the Russian budget, which are used to finance the war against Ukraine.”

These coordinated strikes represent Ukraine’s strategic effort to undermine Russia’s energy sector, a critical source of funding for Moscow’s military operations.
