The U.S. government issued a new security alert Saturday urging Americans in Venezuela to leave the country immediately due to escalating security concerns and the inability of U.S. officials to provide emergency assistance.

“U.S. citizens in Venezuela should leave the country immediately,” the U.S. Embassy Caracas stated in its January 10 security alert, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as international flights have resumed operations.

The warning comes amid reports of armed militias operating at checkpoints throughout the country. According to the embassy, “There are reports of groups of armed militias, known as ‘colectivos,’ setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of U.S. citizenship or support for the United States.”

These pro-government colectivos have increased their presence in urban areas, particularly in the capital city of Caracas, where they have been observed patrolling streets on motorcycles. The paramilitary groups, which operate with tacit government approval, have long been instrumental in suppressing opposition and maintaining control in various neighborhoods.

The State Department continues to maintain Venezuela at its highest travel warning—Level 4: Do Not Travel—citing numerous serious risks to American citizens. These dangers include “wrongful detention, torture in detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, and poor health infrastructure.”

The situation is particularly concerning for U.S. citizens because they cannot rely on consular assistance within Venezuela. “In March 2019, the U.S. Department of State withdrew all diplomatic personnel from U.S. Embassy Caracas and suspended operations,” the embassy noted. “The U.S. government continues to be unable to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela.”

This diplomatic vacuum has created a precarious situation for Americans still in the country, leaving them without official channels for assistance during emergencies.

The current tension follows recent developments that have further strained U.S.-Venezuela relations. Earlier this month, reports emerged of civil unrest after President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been captured and removed from the country by U.S. forces—an extraordinary claim that has intensified anti-American sentiment among Maduro’s supporters.

Venezuela has been mired in a complex political and humanitarian crisis for years. Since 2014, the country has faced severe economic collapse, with hyperinflation, widespread food and medicine shortages, and a massive exodus of refugees to neighboring countries. The United Nations estimates that over 7.7 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2014—one of the largest displacement crises in the world.

The political situation remains volatile, with the international community divided over recognition of leadership between Maduro and opposition figures. The U.S. has maintained sanctions against the Maduro regime, which it considers illegitimate.

Oil-rich Venezuela, once among Latin America’s wealthiest nations, has seen its petroleum industry collapse under state mismanagement, corruption, and lack of investment. The country’s vast oil reserves—the largest proven reserves in the world—have failed to prevent economic catastrophe as production has plummeted to historic lows.

For any Americans still in Venezuela, the embassy’s message is unambiguous: “Do not travel to Venezuela,” and “U.S. citizens in Venezuela are advised to leave Venezuela as soon as they feel it is safe to do so.”

The State Department has yet to provide additional comments regarding the situation, but security experts warn that the environment for Americans in Venezuela is likely to remain dangerous as political tensions persist.
