Sri Lanka Assists Second Iranian Vessel as Death Toll Rises from Submarine Strike

Sri Lanka has begun offloading 208 crew members from an Iranian vessel, just one day after a U.S. submarine strike sank another Iranian warship in the region, killing at least 87 people with several more still missing.

“After detailed discussions with all parties, Sri Lanka has decided to assist the Iranian vessel,” Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced at a press briefing in Colombo. According to the president, the crew being evacuated near the port of Colombo includes 53 officials, 84 cadets, 48 senior sailors, and 23 sailors.

The evacuation comes in the wake of Wednesday’s sinking of the IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka’s coast in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lankan officials have dispatched two freezers to store the 87 bodies recovered at sea following the attack.

General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed that the IRIS Dena was “effectively neutralized” in a Navy “fast attack” using a single Mark 48 torpedo. “The U.S. Navy achieved immediate effect, sending the warship to the bottom of the sea,” Caine stated.

The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Iran claiming the ship was struck without warning in international waters. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi issued a stark warning on social media platform X, saying, “The U.S. will bitterly regret the precedent it has set.”

Iran has requested Sri Lanka’s assistance in repatriating the bodies of the deceased sailors. Search and rescue operations continue for approximately 10 crew members who remain unaccounted for.

According to Sri Lankan officials, the IRIS Dena was returning home after participating in a naval exercise organized by India in the Bay of Bengal. The exercise had taken place between February 18 and 25, suggesting the vessel was on a routine return journey when it was struck.

The attack represents a significant escalation in military tensions between the United States and Iran. Maritime security experts note that submarine strikes against warships are extremely rare outside of declared warfare, making this incident particularly notable in the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

The Indian Ocean, traditionally considered a more stable maritime environment compared to the Persian Gulf, has now become another flashpoint in U.S.-Iranian relations. The sinking occurred far from Iran’s typical operational areas near the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, where previous naval confrontations have taken place.

For Sri Lanka, the incident presents a delicate diplomatic challenge. The island nation now finds itself unexpectedly involved in a major international incident, balancing humanitarian obligations to assist survivors and recover bodies while navigating the complex geopolitics between major powers.

Medical facilities in Sri Lanka are currently treating injured Iranian sailors recovered from the attack. Images from Galle National Hospital show medical personnel attending to sailors brought ashore on stretchers.

Healthcare workers in Galle have been tasked with the grim duty of unloading and processing the bodies of those who perished when the IRIS Dena sank. The high death toll makes this one of the deadliest naval incidents in recent years.

As search efforts continue for those still missing, the full impact of this military action remains to be determined, both in terms of human cost and its broader implications for regional stability and international relations.
