U.S. Military Intensifies Campaign Against ISIS in Syria with Series of Precision Strikes

U.S. Central Command announced Wednesday it has executed five strategic strikes against multiple Islamic State targets in Syria over a six-day period, part of an ongoing mission to prevent the terrorist network’s resurgence in the region.

From January 27 to February 2, CENTCOM forces destroyed an ISIS communication site, a critical logistics node, and several weapons storage facilities using 50 precision munitions delivered by a combination of fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and unmanned aircraft.

“Striking these targets demonstrates our continued focus and resolve for preventing an ISIS resurgence in Syria,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. “Operating in coordination with coalition and partner forces to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS makes America, the region and the world safer.”

The recent operations are part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, launched in December 2025 following a deadly ISIS ambush that killed two U.S. service members and an American interpreter near Palmyra, Syria. The December 13 attack represented a significant escalation in ISIS activity in the region and prompted a swift military response from U.S. forces.

After nearly two months of targeted operations, CENTCOM reports that more than 50 ISIS terrorists have been killed or captured. Among the high-value targets eliminated was Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, a terrorist leader directly connected to the gunman responsible for the December ambush. Al-Jasim was killed during a precision strike in northwest Syria on January 16.

The ongoing campaign underscores the persistent threat posed by ISIS, despite previous claims of the group’s defeat. In 2019, then-President Trump declared ISIS territorially defeated in Syria, but the terrorist organization has since adapted by dispersing fighters across remote areas and maintaining underground cells capable of launching sporadic attacks against both local and international forces.

Security experts note that ISIS continues to exploit regional instability, particularly in areas where governance is weak or contested between various factions in Syria’s complex civil war. The group’s ability to mount attacks like the December ambush demonstrates its ongoing operational capabilities despite years of counterterrorism pressure.

U.S. military leaders emphasize that Operation Hawkeye Strike serves a dual purpose: responding to the immediate threat posed by the December attack while also supporting the broader strategic goal of preventing ISIS from using Syrian territory to plan external operations against the United States and its allies.

“This mission is critical to preventing ISIS from inspiring terrorist plots and attacks against the U.S. homeland,” Cooper said when launching the operation. “We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our partners across the region.”

The current strikes follow an already intensified campaign against ISIS in the months preceding the December attack. CENTCOM reported that U.S. and partner forces conducted more than 80 operations in Syria during the six months prior to Operation Hawkeye Strike, targeting terrorists posing direct threats to American and regional security interests.

The U.S. maintains approximately 900 troops in Syria, primarily in the country’s northeast, where they work alongside Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to prevent an ISIS resurgence. The American military presence in Syria has been controversial, with debates about its scope, duration, and strategic objectives spanning multiple U.S. administrations.

Military analysts suggest that while the current operations have disrupted ISIS capabilities, long-term success will require addressing the political and economic conditions that enable extremist groups to recruit and operate in the region. This includes promoting stable governance, economic opportunity, and reconciliation efforts in areas previously under ISIS control.
