Pro-Iranian Militia Targets U.S. Diplomatic Facility in Baghdad
A suspected retaliatory drone attack by pro-Iranian militias struck the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center on Tuesday, marking the latest escalation in tensions across the Middle East. According to The Washington Post, six drones were launched at the major U.S. diplomatic facility, with five being successfully intercepted and shot down.
One drone reportedly hit near a guard tower at the compound, prompting officials to instruct personnel to “duck and cover.” No injuries were immediately reported in the attack, and security officials confirmed that “accountability is ongoing” as they assess the situation.
Security sources cited by The Washington Post indicated that the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose coalition of Iran-aligned Shiite armed factions, was likely responsible for the attack. This umbrella group has previously claimed responsibility for numerous strikes against U.S. forces throughout the region since tensions escalated following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict last October.
Iraq’s Ministry of Defense issued a statement condemning drone and missile attacks targeting the Martyr Muhammad Alaa Air Base and the Martyr Ali Fallah Air Base but notably did not mention the strike on the U.S. facility or directly reference Iran. The ministry emphasized that these bases “are fully sovereign and Iraqi, subject entirely to the authority of the state and the law, and there is no representation of any foreign forces in them under any designation.”
The attack comes during heightened regional tensions following the launch of Operation Epic Fury, which prompted the State Department to urge Americans to evacuate from more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries. On March 2, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar specifically advised U.S. citizens to depart immediately from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
The State Department has established emergency contact lines for Americans requiring assistance with departure arrangements, available 24/7 at +1-202-501-4444 for those abroad and +1-888-407-4747 for those calling from the U.S. or Canada.
This incident is part of a pattern of escalating attacks against U.S. interests in the region. At least nine U.S. diplomatic missions, including those in Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and Israel, have issued repeated shelter-in-place directives as Iran and its proxy forces have launched retaliatory attacks against U.S. and Israeli targets.
The Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center has long been a critical facility for U.S. operations in Iraq. Established during the American military presence in the country, the center continues to play an important role in diplomatic relations between the United States and Iraq despite the official conclusion of combat operations in December 2011.
Security officials warn that conditions across the Middle East remain volatile and could change rapidly as regional conflicts intensify. The Iraqi government has faced increasing criticism from Western allies for not taking stronger action to disarm Iran-backed militias operating within its borders, which continue to threaten both U.S. interests and regional stability.
The State Department continues to monitor the situation closely, with officials emphasizing that security assessments are being regularly updated in response to evolving threats throughout the region.
