Ukrainian Commander Appeals to Trump Administration for Tomahawk Missiles Amid Intensifying Combat

As fierce fighting continues across Ukraine’s eastern frontlines in Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions, a senior Ukrainian commander has made a direct appeal to the incoming Trump administration for advanced weaponry to counter Russian forces.

Major Oleh Shyriaiev, commander of the 225th Battalion in northern Ukraine, told Fox News Digital from an undisclosed location in the northeastern Sumy region that long-range missiles top Ukraine’s military needs list.

“The main thing that we need is long-range missiles,” Shyriaiev said. “This war is the biggest war in the world since World War II.”

The commander emphasized that Ukraine’s struggle extends beyond merely repelling Russian aggression. For Ukraine, this conflict represents the culmination of a 30-year quest for complete independence from Moscow’s influence since breaking away from the Soviet Union in 1991.

“For the last 300 years, our confrontation, that is, the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, has been our chance to gain independence. And I am sure that we will win this war,” Shyriaiev stated.

Military experts believe U.S.-supplied Tomahawk missiles could significantly bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. These long-range, subsonic cruise missiles have a range of approximately 1,550 miles – sufficient to strike targets deep within Russian territory – and are typically launched from U.S. Navy vessels and submarines.

“Bolstering Kyiv’s long-range strike capabilities can help the Ukrainians impose greater costs on Moscow and undermine Russian offensive operations. Ultimately, this will provide Ukraine and the United States greater leverage to achieve peace,” said John Hardie, deputy director of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies Russia Program.

The possibility of sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine has fluctuated in recent months. President Trump initially hinted at the possibility during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s White House visit in October, saying, “If this war doesn’t get settled, I may send Tomahawks.” However, he later pulled back from this stance, telling reporters aboard Air Force One on November 2 that the U.S. would not be providing such missiles for now.

The Biden administration consistently avoided sending offensive weapons that could be perceived as escalatory by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to reports, Putin personally warned President Trump against providing such weapons during a recent phone call.

Despite uncertainty surrounding U.S. military aid, Major Shyriaiev remains determined about Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. “I am confident that our armed forces will continue to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty regardless of the type and number of weapons we receive,” he said. “While I believe that Ukraine would greatly benefit from the distribution of Tomahawk missiles, given the proven precision capability of these weapons, we know there is a lot going on at the political level, and we will defend our nation with all the tools at our disposal.”

Shyriaiev is currently positioned in Sumy oblast, a strategically vital region bordering Russia that has been central to Ukrainian counteroffensives this fall. While Russian forces continue making slow but steady advances elsewhere, Ukrainian forces have successfully stalled Russian progress in Sumy. Reclaiming Russian-held territory in this region would strengthen Ukraine’s position in any future peace negotiations – a stated priority for the Trump administration.

The commander described Russia’s battlefield tactics as “meat assaults,” where overwhelming numbers of soldiers are sacrificed in what he likened to a “meat grinder” approach. Despite the human cost, this strategy has yielded some successes for Russian forces.

Shyriaiev noted that even if Russia succeeds in capturing strategic locations such as Pokrovsk, the victory will come at an enormous price. “Every larger town or smaller city will be a serious battle to take, and the Russians will be losing a large number of manpower here in Pokrovsk. So Pokrovsk is one of those places where they will lose a lot of troops and their combat capability will suffer seriously from that,” he explained.

As the conflict enters its fourth year with no clear resolution in sight, Ukraine’s military leadership continues to press for advanced Western weaponry while preparing to defend their nation regardless of international support levels.
