A hard-right British politician and former ally of Reform U.K. leader Nigel Farage was sentenced Friday to 10 1/2 years in prison for accepting bribes to make pro-Russian statements in the European Parliament.
Nathan Gill, 52, who previously led Reform in Wales, pleaded guilty earlier this year to eight counts of bribery committed between December 2018 and July 2019. British authorities estimate he received approximately £40,000 ($53,000) for his actions.
During the sentencing at London’s Central Criminal Court, commonly known as the Old Bailey, Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb declared that Gill had allowed money to “corrupt his moral compass” when his duty as an elected official was to “speak with honesty and conviction.”
“When you say what someone has paid you to say you are not speaking with sincerity,” the judge added in her rebuke.
Prosecutors revealed that Gill was working at the behest of Oleg Voloshyn, a former pro-Russia Ukrainian politician. Gill’s tasks included delivering pro-Russian statements about events in Ukraine during European Parliament sessions and writing opinion pieces for news outlets such as 112 Ukraine.
The investigation into Gill began when he was stopped at Manchester Airport in September 2021 while attempting to travel to Russia. Authorities examined his mobile phone and discovered coded messages between him and Voloshyn that detailed their financial arrangements. The communications also indicated that Gill was tasked with recruiting other European Parliament members to support Russia’s position on Ukraine.
“The communications between the two men showed that an established relationship existed between them,” prosecutor Mark Heywood told the court.
This case has particular significance given the geopolitical context. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, following its earlier annexation of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine in 2014. The United Kingdom has positioned itself as one of Ukraine’s strongest allies since the invasion began, making Gill’s pro-Russian advocacy especially contentious.
Gill’s political career traces back to 2014, when he was first elected to the European Parliament representing the anti-EU U.K. Independence Party (UKIP) under Farage’s leadership. He later followed Farage to the Brexit Party and remained in the European legislature until Britain’s departure from the European Union in early 2020. He subsequently led Reform U.K.’s Welsh branch during regional elections in 2021, though he is no longer affiliated with the party.
The sentencing has intensified scrutiny of potential Russian interference in British politics, with particular focus on Reform U.K., which currently leads in national opinion polls. The party has consistently maintained a less confrontational stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin compared to other British political parties.
Ed Davey, leader of the centrist Liberal Democrats, has called for a comprehensive investigation, stating, “A traitor was at the very top of Reform U.K., aiding and abetting a foreign adversary. Nigel Farage himself was previously paid to be on Putin’s TV channel, Russia Today, and said he was the world leader he admires the most. We must all ask – where do his loyalties really lie? We need a full investigation into Russian interference in our politics.”
Reform U.K. responded with a statement condemning Gill’s actions as “reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable,” expressing satisfaction that “justice has been served.” Farage has previously distanced himself from Gill, describing him as a “bad apple” and noting that any political organization “can find in their midst all sorts of terrible people.”
Meanwhile, Voloshyn, who maintained connections to media outlets like 112 Ukraine, is believed to be residing in Russia and remains wanted by both British and Ukrainian authorities. His role in the bribery scheme highlights the complex web of influence operations that Russia has allegedly deployed across European political institutions.
The case represents one of the most explicit examples of foreign interference in British democratic institutions to come to light in recent years, raising questions about vulnerability to external influence as the U.K. navigates its post-Brexit international relationships.
