UK authorities are investigating a series of arson attacks on Jewish sites across London that may be linked to Iranian proxies, as the British Jewish community faces what the country’s chief rabbi described as a “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation.”

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that counterterrorism officers are examining connections between recent fires at synagogues and Jewish community facilities, as well as an attack on a Persian-language media company critical of the Iranian government. The latest incident occurred Saturday night when a north London synagogue sustained minor damage.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans revealed that the attacks have been claimed online by a group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which translates to “the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right.”

“We are aware of public reporting that suggests this group may have links to Iran. As you would expect, we will continue to explore that question as our investigation evolves,” Evans said. “I’ve spoken previously about the Iranian regime’s use of criminal proxies, and we’re considering whether this tactic is being used here in London.”

Israeli authorities have described the group as recently founded with suspected ties to “an Iranian proxy” that has also claimed responsibility for synagogue attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In response to the threats, police have deployed additional uniformed and plainclothes officers throughout northwest London following a month of targeted attacks. The most serious incident occurred on March 23 in the Golders Green neighborhood, where four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set ablaze.

While no injuries have been reported in any of these incidents, which all took place within a few miles of each other, authorities have arrested and charged several people ranging from teenagers to individuals in their 40s.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed grave concern on social media platform X: “A sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum. Thank God, no lives have been lost, but we cannot, and must not, wait for that to change before we understand just how dangerous this moment is for all of our society.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks as “appalled” and pledged that “those responsible will be found and brought to justice.” He emphasized, “This is abhorrent and it will not be tolerated. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.”

The situation escalated when the same group posted a video claiming Israel’s London embassy would be targeted with drones carrying dangerous substances. Although police determined the embassy was not attacked, authorities temporarily closed nearby Kensington Gardens park on Friday to examine discarded items including two jars containing powder, which were later found to be harmless.

Britain’s security services have been increasingly concerned about Iranian activities on UK soil. MI5, the domestic intelligence service, reported that more than 20 “potentially lethal” Iran-backed plots were disrupted in the year leading up to October. The UK has specifically accused Iran of using criminal proxies to conduct attacks in Europe targeting opposition media outlets and Jewish communities.

Some security experts remain skeptical about Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, suggesting it may be more of a “flag of convenience” rather than an organized group, and its claims should be treated cautiously.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes issued a stern warning to anyone involved in carrying out such attacks: “Let’s be really clear — it’s a mug’s game. That’s what people who are now serving long prison sentences have found out, and the same fate awaits those responsible for these recent crimes.”

The ongoing investigation highlights growing concerns about transnational threats and the potential for foreign interference in domestic security matters, particularly targeting religious and ethnic communities in major Western capitals.
