British counterterrorism police have launched an investigation into an attempted arson attack in London, adding to a concerning series of incidents targeting Jewish and Iranian premises across the city.

The latest incident occurred Friday night in the Hendon area of northwest London, where a suspect was spotted leaving a bag containing three bottles of fluid outside a building previously used by the Jewish community. The perpetrator attempted to ignite the contents, but they failed to fully catch fire before the suspect fled the scene. No arrests have been made in connection with this incident.

While the Metropolitan Police stated they are not currently linking this attempt to other recent attacks in the area, Counter Terrorism Policing London has taken charge of the investigation “due to the similarities of each attack.” Authorities have clarified they are not treating these incidents as acts of terrorism at this time.

This attempted arson follows several similar incidents that have raised concerns about targeted attacks against religious and media organizations in London. On March 23, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set ablaze in nearby Golders Green. Four individuals have since been charged in connection with that attack.

More recently, authorities are investigating an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in northwest London that occurred on Wednesday. On the same day, what police described as an “ignited container” was thrown into the premises of a Persian media organization in Wembley, another northwest London neighborhood. Two men and a teenage boy have been charged with arson in relation to the media organization attack.

No injuries have been reported in any of these incidents, but the pattern has sparked serious security concerns among London’s Jewish community and Iranian opposition groups.

Intelligence officials are exploring potential international connections to these attacks. One line of investigation is examining possible links to Iran. British authorities have previously accused the Iranian regime of employing criminal proxies to conduct attacks on European soil, specifically targeting opposition media outlets and Jewish community facilities.

Britain’s MI5 domestic intelligence service reported that more than 20 “potentially lethal” Iran-backed plots were disrupted in the year leading up to October. This represents a significant security challenge for UK authorities as tensions between Western nations and Iran continue to escalate.

The targeting of Persian-language media organizations is particularly notable, as these outlets often serve as platforms for Iranian opposition voices and critics of the Tehran regime. Many such organizations operate from London, which has become a hub for Iranian diaspora media.

These incidents come amid heightened global tensions following Iran’s direct missile attack on Israel in April and ongoing regional conflicts. Security experts have long warned that such geopolitical tensions could manifest as targeted attacks against specific communities or organizations in Western cities.

London’s Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in affected areas and urged the public to remain vigilant. Community leaders have called for enhanced security measures around vulnerable sites, including synagogues, Jewish community centers, and Iranian opposition facilities.

The string of attacks has also raised questions about coordination between local criminal elements and foreign actors. Intelligence agencies across Europe have increasingly warned about the sophisticated nature of state-sponsored proxy operations that utilize local criminals to carry out attacks, creating plausible deniability for foreign governments.

As the investigation continues, authorities are analyzing forensic evidence from all scenes and reviewing surveillance footage to determine whether the same individuals were involved in multiple incidents or if they represent separate but similar attacks.
