British Counterterror Police Investigate Iranian Links to Jewish Site Attacks

British counterterrorism officials have launched an investigation into a series of arson attacks targeting Jewish institutions across London, with growing suspicions that Iranian proxies may be orchestrating the violence.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that specialized counterterror units are examining multiple fires at synagogues, Jewish community facilities and a Persian-language media outlet known for its criticism of Iran’s regime. The latest incident occurred Saturday night, causing minor damage to a synagogue in north London. While no injuries have been reported in any of the attacks, all took place within a few miles of each other in the city’s northwest.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans revealed authorities are scrutinizing claims of responsibility from a group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which translates to Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right.

“We are aware of public reporting that suggests this group may have links to Iran. As you would expect, we will continue to explore that question as our investigation evolves,” Evans stated. “I’ve spoken previously about the Iranian regime’s use of criminal proxies, and we’re considering whether this tactic is being used here in London.”

The same group has also claimed responsibility for synagogue attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands, with Israeli authorities describing it as a possible Iranian proxy operation. This represents a significant escalation in what security officials believe could be state-sponsored terrorism on British soil.

In response to the violence, police have significantly increased their presence in northwest London following several concerning incidents. Among the most troubling was the March 23 torching of four Jewish charity ambulances in the Golders Green neighborhood, an area with a significant Jewish population.

The threat level intensified further when the group released a video threatening to target Israel’s embassy in London with drones carrying hazardous substances. Police temporarily closed nearby Kensington Gardens while investigating suspicious items, though authorities later confirmed no dangerous materials were discovered.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed growing alarm about the situation, warning on social media that “a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum.”

“Thank God, no lives have been lost, but we cannot, and must not, wait for that to change before we understand just how dangerous this moment is for all of our society,” he added.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks as “abhorrent” and promised those responsible “will be found and brought to justice.” His comments reflect the government’s concern about potential foreign interference in domestic affairs, particularly at a time of heightened global tensions involving Iran.

The investigation has already led to several arrests, with suspects ranging from teenagers to individuals in their 40s. British security services have long warned about Iran’s use of criminal networks to carry out attacks across Europe. MI5, the UK’s domestic security service, reports disrupting more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-linked plots within the past year alone.

Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes issued a stern warning to anyone considering involvement in such attacks: “Let’s be really clear — it’s a mug’s game. That’s what people who are now serving long prison sentences have found out, and the same fate awaits those responsible for these recent crimes.”

The investigation underscores growing concerns about transnational threats to Jewish communities across Europe. Security analysts note that these incidents occur against a backdrop of rising antisemitism globally and complex geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and Western nations.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine whether these attacks represent isolated incidents or part of a broader, coordinated foreign-backed campaign targeting Jewish institutions in the United Kingdom and beyond.
