President Trump has called the recent shooting of two National Guard members near the White House a “heinous assault” that demonstrates how immigration policies have become “the single greatest national security threat facing our nation.”

“No country can tolerate such a risk to our very survival,” Trump declared in a video statement released on social media Wednesday, signaling his administration’s continued focus on immigration enforcement and heightened scrutiny of migrants already in the United States.

According to Trump and law enforcement officials, the shooting suspect is believed to be a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the United States in September 2021 during the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan. The suspect was reportedly part of Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration program that resettled approximately 76,000 Afghans following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

The incident has intensified debate over the vetting processes used during the hasty evacuation from Afghanistan. Many of those brought to the United States had worked alongside American forces as interpreters and translators, often at great personal risk.

In his remarks, Trump described Afghanistan as “a hellhole on earth” and announced plans to review everyone who entered the United States from the country during the Biden administration – a measure his team had already been developing before the shooting.

The president’s comments extended beyond the immediate incident to broader immigration concerns. He specifically mentioned Minnesota, claiming that “hundreds of thousands of Somalians” are “ripping apart that once-great state.” Minnesota is home to approximately 87,000 Somali Americans, many of whom arrived as refugees over several decades.

This reference to an immigrant community unconnected to Wednesday’s shooting underscores the expansive scope of Trump’s immigration agenda. His administration has already stepped up deportations of undocumented immigrants and reduced refugee admissions, reallocating federal resources toward these priorities.

Following Trump’s statement, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced an indefinite halt to processing all immigration requests for Afghan nationals pending a review of security protocols.

Advocates for Afghan evacuees expressed concern that the incident would unfairly tarnish tens of thousands of Afghans who have successfully integrated into American society or are still awaiting resettlement.

“I don’t want people to leverage this tragedy into a political ploy,” said Shawn VanDiver, president of #AfghanEvac, defending the broader refugee program.

Under Operation Allies Welcome, Afghan evacuees were initially brought to U.S. military bases for immigration processing and medical evaluations before permanent resettlement. Four years later, many Afghans remain in transit points in the Middle East and Europe, having undergone extensive vetting but finding themselves in limbo since Trump’s executive actions restricting immigration.

Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s position, criticizing the Biden administration for “opening the floodgate to unvetted Afghan refugees” and asserting that “they shouldn’t have been in our country.”

“Already some voices in corporate media chirp that our immigration policies are too harsh,” Vance wrote on social media. “Tonight is a reminder of why they’re wrong.”

The shooting incident and subsequent response illustrate the administration’s determination to make immigration enforcement a cornerstone of its security policy. Trump emphasized this priority by stating he wants to remove anyone “who does not belong here or does not add benefit to our country,” adding, “If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them.”

The administration’s stance signals that border security and migrant scrutiny will remain prominent features of Trump’s second term, potentially reshaping America’s immigration landscape for years to come.
