President Trump Invites Family of Fallen National Guard Member to White House
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he has extended an invitation to the White House for the families of two National Guard members who were victims of a shooting in Washington, D.C. last week.
U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died following the Wednesday attack, while U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Both were members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I said, ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,'” Trump told reporters after speaking with the devastated parents. “And likewise with Andrew, recover or not.”
The attack has sent shockwaves through West Virginia communities, where vigils have been held to honor the soldiers. On Saturday evening, residents gathered at Webster County High School, Beckstrom’s alma mater, to pay tribute to the fallen soldier.
Gabriel Markle, the school’s principal, remembered Beckstrom fondly during the ceremony. “Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a contagious smile and a positive energy that lifted people around her,” Markle said. “She was sweet, caring and always willing to help others.”
Beckstrom, from Summersville, West Virginia, graduated in June 2023 and immediately enlisted in the National Guard. She served as a military police officer and was known for her dedication to service.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, who spoke at Saturday’s vigil, had visited Wolfe’s family earlier that day. “She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had courage,” Morrisey told the crowd about Beckstrom. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.”
Wolfe, from Martinsburg, entered military service in February 2019 after graduating from Musselman High School. Governor Morrisey told Fox News Channel’s “The Sunday Briefing” that Wolfe remained hospitalized and was “fighting for his life.” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi also indicated on “Fox News Sunday” that she planned to meet with Wolfe’s family.
Both National Guard members were deployed to Washington, D.C. as part of President Trump’s crime-fighting initiative that federalized the district’s police force. The program, which has been a signature policy of Trump’s administration, aims to reduce crime rates in the nation’s capital.
The shooting suspect, a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. The incident has prompted swift policy responses from the Trump administration, including a temporary halt to all asylum decisions and a pause in issuing visas for people traveling on Afghan passports.
The attack comes at a time of heightened debate around immigration policies. The administration’s response reflects Trump’s consistent emphasis on national security concerns related to immigration, particularly from countries he has previously designated for travel restrictions.
Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom have not yet been finalized, according to Cathy Pettry, owner of Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. The funeral home has been in contact with Beckstrom’s family regarding services.
The shooting has united communities across West Virginia in grief. At the Webster County High School vigil, attendees sat in bleachers and folding chairs, lit candles, and listened to words of comfort from clergy and state officials.
As the families navigate their grief, President Trump’s invitation to the White House represents a national acknowledgment of their sacrifice. The incident continues to reverberate beyond West Virginia as a painful reminder of the risks faced by National Guard members serving in domestic operations.
