Trump Lashes Out at Italian Prime Minister Meloni in Escalating Diplomatic Row

Tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni erupted into public view Tuesday, with Trump accusing one of his closest European allies of lacking “courage” and failing to support American efforts against Iran.

In a blunt phone interview with Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, Trump called Meloni “unacceptable” and said he was “shocked” by her stance on regional conflicts. The dispute was further inflamed by Meloni’s criticism of Trump’s recent comments targeting Pope Leo XIV, which she had termed “unacceptable.”

“She isn’t giving us any help, I’m shocked by her,” Trump said in the six-minute conversation with the Italian publication. He went further, accusing Meloni of relying on Washington’s military strength while refusing to take action herself, particularly regarding security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.

“They depend on Donald Trump to keep it open,” the president said, in reference to the vital maritime passage.

The public spat marks a dramatic shift in relations between the two leaders. Just weeks ago, Trump had praised Meloni as “a great leader” after she attended his 2025 inauguration. Neither the White House nor Meloni’s office immediately responded to requests for comment on the latest exchange.

Vatican Tensions Add Fuel to Diplomatic Fire

The dispute intensified following Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff. In a scathing post on Truth Social, Trump blasted the Pope as “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy,” advising him to “focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician.” Trump’s post accused the Pope of “catering to the Radical Left” at the expense of global security.

In his Corriere della Sera interview, Trump doubled down, saying the pontiff “has no idea what’s going on in Iran” and “doesn’t understand” the stakes involved in the current Middle East conflicts.

Italy Shifts Stance on Israel

Meloni’s cooling relationship with Trump coincides with Italy’s recalibration of its position toward Israel. On Tuesday, Meloni confirmed that Italy had suspended the automatic renewal of a long-standing defense cooperation agreement with Israel.

“In light of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel,” she said, according to Reuters.

This shift follows recent tensions between Rome and Jerusalem, including an incident where Israeli forces reportedly fired warning shots near Italian troops serving in southern Lebanon under a U.N. mandate. Israeli officials downplayed the significance of Italy’s move, describing the agreement as largely symbolic with no “substantive content.”

In Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized his government over Italy’s decision, calling it “another embarrassing failure of the prime minister and the non-existent foreign minister.” Lapid pointed out that Meloni “is not a left-wing progressive European leader. She belongs to the conservative right and understands the need to fight terrorism.”

Growing Fractures in Western Alliances

Meloni’s repositioning reflects broader challenges facing European leaders as the U.S.-led confrontation with Iran creates ripple effects across the continent. Political analysts note that the war’s economic impact, particularly rising energy costs, weighs heavily on Italy’s import-dependent economy, influencing both public opinion and political calculations.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani defended Meloni while attempting to preserve the transatlantic relationship, reaffirming Italy’s alliance with the United States while emphasizing that cooperation must be grounded in “loyalty, respect and mutual frankness.”

These tensions highlight significant strains within NATO and other Western alliances. Senator Marco Rubio recently suggested the U.S. might need to “reexamine” NATO membership after some allies blocked basing and airspace help during recent military operations. President Trump himself has reportedly considered withdrawing from NATO over allies’ positions on the Iran conflict.

As the Middle East situation continues to evolve, the public rift between Trump and Meloni illustrates the difficult balancing act facing European leaders caught between strategic partnerships with the United States and domestic political pressures.
