President Trump Delays Meetings with Putin and Zelenskyy Until Ukraine Peace Deal Nears Completion

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will postpone direct meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy until a peace agreement between the warring nations is either finalized or in its final stages.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump claimed “tremendous progress” had been made in peace negotiations over the past week, characterizing it as the most significant movement toward ending hostilities since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.

“Over the past week, my team has made tremendous progress with respect to ending the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote. “The original 28-Point Peace Plan, which was drafted by the United States, has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement.”

The former president, who has frequently asserted the war would never have started under his administration, revealed he has directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Putin in Moscow while Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll engages with Ukrainian officials. Trump’s senior administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, will be briefed on all progress.

U.S. diplomats have described the current negotiations as the “closest they have been” to a potential agreement since the war began. According to a U.S. official who spoke with Fox News Digital on Tuesday, Ukraine has agreed in principle to a peace deal that would end the conflict, though some minor details remain unresolved.

Despite the diplomatic momentum, violence on the ground continues. Overnight, Russia launched a large drone-and-missile strike on Kyiv, killing at least seven people and damaging power infrastructure—actions that underscore the fragility of the peace process.

A revised framework, modified from the original 28-point plan, has reportedly gained preliminary acceptance from both Kyiv and Washington. Moscow is currently reviewing the latest revisions, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

The timing of Trump’s announcement coincides with parallel European efforts to support Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that France and its EU partners are close to finalizing their own plan to support Ukraine and secure what he called a “serious” peace rooted in international law.

Following a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing—a group of European nations committed to supporting Ukraine—Macron emphasized that “all the countries around the table want peace, but they want a peace that is just and lasting.” He specifically addressed territorial and security concerns while warning that Russia’s continued strikes on civilian infrastructure demonstrate “the exact opposite of any genuine desire for peace.”

Macron outlined European priorities that include increased sanctions on Russia to pressure Moscow to negotiate. “This includes our sanctions, the U.S. sanctions coming into force, and our actions against the ‘shadow fleet’ involved in illicit oil shipments worldwide,” he explained.

The French president also highlighted two key European initiatives: finalizing an EU solution for frozen Russian assets and establishing long-term security guarantees to ensure any ceasefire remains enforceable and durable.

“We all support the pursuit of a peace plan, so this work must continue, and we are coordinating closely with the United States to move forward on a framework that could be acceptable,” Macron added, suggesting that while European leaders might have some reservations about the U.S. approach, they are working toward a coordinated strategy.

The dual-track approach—with Trump’s team engaging directly with Moscow and Kyiv while European powers prepare their own complementary framework—reflects the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding efforts to end a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and destabilized European security.

Trump concluded his statement by emphasizing the urgency of reaching a peaceful solution: “Thank you for your attention to this very important matter, and let’s all hope that PEACE can be accomplished AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!”
