Trump Claims Progress on Ukraine-Russia Deal, Acknowledges Conflict’s Complexity

President Trump on Tuesday indicated that Ukraine and Russia are advancing toward a peace agreement, though he acknowledged the complexity of the negotiations amid deep-seated animosities between the warring nations.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during his return from Asia, Trump offered a measured assessment of the ongoing diplomatic efforts to end a conflict that has raged since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

“We’re having good talks,” Trump said. “Ukraine is doing well. I think they’re pretty happy about it. I’d like to see it end, and we won’t know for a little while. Well, we’re making progress.”

The president revealed that U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff would soon travel to Moscow for negotiations, possibly accompanied by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who has taken on an increasingly prominent role in the administration’s foreign policy initiatives.

Despite his optimism, Trump candidly admitted the challenge of resolving the conflict, even with his personal relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We settled eight wars, and I thought this would be one of the easier ones because of my relationship with President Putin, but this is probably one of the more difficult ones. There’s a lot of hatred,” he explained.

European nations have emerged as key players in the negotiations, according to Trump, particularly in establishing security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future Russian aggression. These guarantees represent a crucial component of any sustainable peace agreement, as Kyiv has repeatedly emphasized the need for robust security arrangements in any settlement.

The administration came under scrutiny last week after presenting a 28-point peace proposal to U.S. lawmakers. The plan faced criticism from both sides of the aisle, with some Republican legislators characterizing it as overly favorable to Moscow’s interests.

Trump downplayed concerns about the document during his remarks on Tuesday, insisting it was “just a map” and “not a plan” but rather “a concept.” He suggested the negotiation process has already reduced the points of contention from 28 to approximately 22, with several issues being resolved “very favorably.”

“From there they’re taking each one of the 28 points, and then you get down to 22 points. A lot of them were solved and actually very favorably solved. So, we’ll see what happens,” the president said.

The war in Ukraine has continued to exact a devastating toll. Just last week, Russian strikes on the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil reportedly killed 25 people, highlighting the ongoing violence even as diplomatic efforts intensify.

When pressed on a timeline for reaching a peace agreement, Trump declined to set a specific deadline. “The deadline for me is when it’s over,” he stated. “I think everybody’s tired of fighting at this moment. They are losing, losing too many people.”

The peace negotiations come at a critical juncture in the conflict. After nearly four years of fighting, both sides have suffered heavy casualties and territorial control has shifted multiple times. Ukraine’s military situation has grown increasingly precarious in recent months as Russian forces have made steady gains in the eastern Donbas region.

Diplomatic observers note that significant obstacles remain, particularly regarding Ukraine’s territorial integrity, future NATO membership prospects, and accountability for war crimes. Whether the current round of talks can overcome these challenges remains uncertain, but Trump’s personal investment in the process signals his administration’s prioritization of ending the conflict.
