A truck crashed into an outdoor market in Bucheon, South Korea on Thursday, killing two people and injuring 18 others in a tragic incident that has shaken the community located near Seoul.
The collision occurred shortly before 11 a.m. local time, according to city officials. The two victims were pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital. Among the injured, nine people suffered serious wounds, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether any of these injuries are life-threatening.
Police have detained the driver, described as a man in his 60s, for questioning. Bucheon police official Son Byeong-sam confirmed that initial tests showed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
Witnesses provided troubling details about the sequence of events. According to Park Geum-cheon, an official from Bucheon’s fire station, bystanders reported that the truck first reversed approximately 28 meters (92 feet) before surging forward 150 meters (492 feet), striking pedestrians in its path.
The driver has claimed that a vehicle malfunction caused the crash. Investigators are now reviewing security camera footage from the market area to verify this claim and reconstruct the exact circumstances of the incident.
Images from the crash site revealed extensive damage, with the truck wedged into a storefront amid scattered debris. Toppled boxes, clothing items, and broken signboards littered the area. The truck itself sustained significant damage, with its front left side crumpled and windows shattered. Authorities have since removed the vehicle to conduct a thorough forensic examination.
Bucheon Mayor Cho Yong-eek addressed the incident in a statement, pledging support for the affected community. “The city will assist with the restoration of damaged facilities,” the mayor said. He also announced plans for safety inspections throughout the market and psychological support services for merchants and witnesses traumatized by the crash.
The outdoor markets of South Korea serve as vital commercial and cultural hubs in many communities. They typically feature densely packed stalls selling everything from fresh produce to clothing and household goods, with narrow walkways often crowded with shoppers. This layout makes such locations particularly vulnerable to vehicle incidents, whether accidental or deliberate.
South Korea has faced similar tragedies in the past. In 2016, a truck crashed into a street market in Seongnam, injuring 13 people. More recently, the country has implemented stricter safety measures and traffic regulations around markets and pedestrian areas in response to such incidents.
Traffic accidents involving elderly drivers have become a growing concern in South Korea, which has one of the world’s fastest-aging populations. According to government statistics, drivers over 65 are involved in a disproportionate number of serious accidents compared to younger age groups.
The city government has not yet released an estimate of property damage from Thursday’s crash, including the number of shops affected. As the investigation continues, local authorities are working to ensure market vendors receive necessary support and that enhanced safety measures are implemented to prevent future tragedies.
The incident has prompted renewed calls from safety advocates for better protection of outdoor shopping areas, including the installation of bollards or barriers to shield pedestrians from vehicular traffic.
