A German tourist has died after being bitten by a venomous cobra during a snake show at a luxury resort in Egypt, according to Bavarian State Police who released details of the incident on Monday.

The tragic accident occurred in early April when the 57-year-old man from Germany’s Unterallgäu region was watching a snake charming performance at a hotel in Hurghada, a popular Red Sea resort destination. During the show, one of the cobras unexpectedly slithered up the man’s pants and bit him on the leg.

“During the snake charmer’s performance, one of the snakes crawled into the trousers of a 57-year-old man, resulting in a bite to the German tourist’s leg,” officials stated in their report.

The victim, whose identity has not been released by authorities, was vacationing with two family members when the incident occurred. According to investigators, the snake show was part of the hotel’s regular entertainment program for guests.

Police reported that two snakes, believed to be cobras, were used in the performance. Such shows are common attractions at Egyptian resorts, where performers often allow close interaction between the reptiles and audience members. Investigators noted that during some segments of these performances, snakes are sometimes placed around guests’ necks as part of the entertainment.

After being bitten, the man “exhibited clear symptoms of poisoning and required resuscitation,” according to the police statement. Despite emergency efforts, he died shortly after arriving at a local hospital. Authorities are still awaiting the results of a toxicological examination to confirm the exact cause of death.

Cobra venom is known for its potent neurotoxic effects. Without prompt and appropriate medical treatment, a cobra bite can lead to rapid respiratory failure and paralysis. The speed at which the venom takes effect can make treatment particularly challenging, especially in tourist areas where specialized anti-venom may not be immediately available.

Hurghada, where the incident took place, is one of Egypt’s premier tourist destinations, known for its all-inclusive resort packages, pristine beaches, and water activities. The city attracts millions of European tourists annually, particularly from Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom, who come for its year-round warm weather and Red Sea diving opportunities.

The investigation into the tourist’s death is being conducted by Germany’s Memmingen Criminal Police Inspectorate under the direction of the Memmingen Public Prosecutor’s Office. International incidents involving tourists often require cooperation between countries, with German authorities taking a lead role due to the citizenship of the victim.

This tragedy highlights the potential risks associated with wildlife entertainment shows that feature dangerous animals. Snake charming has a long tradition in Egypt and several other countries, but safety protocols can vary significantly between venues.

Tourist safety experts often caution visitors about participating in wildlife shows where adequate safety measures may not be in place. Many legitimate wildlife demonstrations maintain strict barriers between dangerous animals and spectators, but standards are not universally enforced across all tourist destinations.

The incident serves as a somber reminder for tourists to exercise caution when attending wildlife shows abroad and to research the safety records of attractions before participating. Egyptian tourism authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding any potential review of safety regulations for snake shows at resort properties.
