Three people, including two Singaporeans, have died following an eruption at Mount Dukono, a continuously active volcano on Indonesia’s remote Halmahera island. The tragedy occurred Friday when approximately 20 climbers ventured into a restricted zone despite clear warnings and safety restrictions.
North Halmahera police chief Erlichson Pasaribu confirmed that the hikers knowingly entered the prohibited area, which had been designated as a restricted zone due to the volcano’s high alert status. “They were aware that climbing was prohibited… but insisted on going ahead,” Pasaribu said. He noted a concerning trend of visitors ignoring safety regulations to create content for social media, despite explicit warnings posted both online and at the site.
The eruption began at 7:41 a.m. local time, sending a massive ash column over six miles into the sky and leaving the climbing group stranded. Emergency signals from the mountain area prompted the immediate deployment of rescue teams.
As of Friday afternoon, authorities had successfully evacuated 17 climbers, including seven Singaporean nationals and two Indonesians who joined the rescue operation. Five of those evacuated sustained injuries of varying severity.
The bodies of the three deceased victims—one local resident from Ternate in the same province as Mount Dukono and two Singaporean nationals—remain on the volcano. Ongoing eruptions and challenging terrain have prevented recovery teams from reaching them.
“Friday’s eruption was among the strongest during this period,” said Lana Saria, head of Indonesia’s Geology Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. While Mount Dukono has been continuously erupting since 1933 according to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, this event marked a significant intensification of its activity.
The disaster highlights the dangers of ignoring safety restrictions in active volcanic zones. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is home to approximately 130 active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most geologically volatile regions. Mount Dukono’s persistent activity has earned it a high-risk designation, necessitating the restricted access policies that were disregarded by the climbers.
This incident bears similarities to other recent cases where tourists have ignored safety warnings at natural sites. Authorities across Indonesia have increasingly expressed concern about visitors taking dangerous risks, often motivated by the desire to capture dramatic photographs or videos for social media platforms.
Police officials indicated they will be questioning individuals who accompanied the hikers up the mountain, suggesting potential legal consequences for those who facilitated access to the restricted area.
Rescue operations remain ongoing, with joint search and rescue teams coordinating evacuation efforts in challenging conditions. The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari has been providing updates on the rescue progress, noting that several climbers contributed critical information about routes that helped with the evacuation process.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger enforcement of safety restrictions at Indonesia’s natural hazard sites and highlighted the potentially deadly consequences of prioritizing adventure tourism and social media content over adherence to safety guidelines.
Local authorities continue to monitor the volcanic activity at Mount Dukono while working to complete rescue operations and eventually recover the remains of those who lost their lives in this tragic event.

Deeply saddened to hear about this preventable tragedy. While creating engaging social media content is important, it should never come at the cost of human life. The victims clearly underestimated the risks posed by this active, high-alert volcano.
Tragic that these hikers ignored the clear warnings and restrictions. Social media content should never come at the cost of human lives. Authorities must enforce safety regulations more strictly to prevent such senseless loss in the future.
Absolutely. The volcano’s high alert status means it’s simply not worth the risk, no matter how compelling the content might be. Hopefully this serves as a sobering lesson to others considering similar stunts.

Absolutely. Authorities must take a firm stance to discourage such reckless behavior, even if it means cracking down on the pursuit of social media fame. Safety has to be the top priority.
It’s deeply disturbing to see people so recklessly endangering themselves for social media. The local authorities were right to restrict access to this volatile volcano – their warnings should be heeded. My condolences to the victims’ families.
Agreed. The safety regulations are in place for good reason, and it’s tragic that these hikers disregarded them. Hopefully this leads to even stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
This is an awful and preventable loss of life. While creating compelling content is important, it should never come at the expense of basic safety precautions. The restricted zone designation was clearly warranted given the volcano’s active status.
This is a heartbreaking outcome, and a stark reminder that safety regulations exist for good reason, especially around hazardous natural features like active volcanoes. My condolences to the victims’ loved ones – I hope this leads to stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
Agreed. The local authorities were right to restrict access, and it’s tragic that these hikers disregarded their warnings. Hopefully this serves as a wake-up call about the very real dangers of such reckless behavior.
