Germany’s most famous mountain cross has been temporarily removed from the nation’s highest peak for much-needed restoration work, primarily to address damage caused by visitors’ stickers that have accumulated over decades.

On Tuesday, a helicopter operation carefully lifted the iconic gilded cross from the 2,962-meter (9,718-foot) summit of the Zugspitze, a prominent Alpine peak straddling the German-Austrian border in Bavaria. The cross, standing 4.88 meters (16 feet) tall and weighing 300 kilograms (661 pounds), was transported to craftswoman Andrea Würzinger’s workshop in nearby Eschenlohe.

Würzinger faces the painstaking task of removing hundreds of stickers that tourists have plastered on the landmark over the years. After clearing the adhesive residue, she will sand the iron structure and selectively apply new gold leaf to damaged areas. With gold prices at premium levels, Würzinger noted that restoration efforts would be targeted: “We want to try to gild it only where there is no longer gold.”

The current cross has its own history, having been crafted in 1993 by Andrea’s father, Franz Würzinger, to replace the original 1851 cross that had deteriorated beyond repair. The sticker problem has escalated dramatically over time. During its first restoration approximately 15 years after installation, the cross bore just three stickers. By 2017, that number had grown to around 70. Today, hundreds of stickers cover the religious symbol.

Tourism has played a significant role in this deterioration. The Zugspitze attracts approximately 600,000 visitors annually, most accessing the summit via mountain railway and cable car systems operated by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn. While the transit infrastructure makes Germany’s highest point easily accessible, the actual peak with its cross requires a short but sometimes challenging climb from the summit station.

This accessibility has transformed the cross into a popular backdrop for social media photos. On busy days, the summit area becomes congested and potentially hazardous, especially when slippery. Many visitors arrive unprepared, lacking appropriate footwear for mountain conditions. Some engage in risky maneuvers to place their stickers on uncovered portions of the cross, contributing to both the landmark’s deterioration and safety concerns.

In response to these challenges, authorities inaugurated a replica cross inside the summit station this July. This alternative aims to redirect visitors’ selfie-taking and sticker-placing impulses to a safer location, potentially preserving the original landmark while still satisfying tourists’ desire for photographic mementos.

The restoration project has taken on additional urgency with the approaching winter tourism season. Würzinger and the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn are working to complete the restoration and return the cross to its rightful place by November 28, when the ski season officially begins in the region.

This incident highlights broader challenges faced by popular natural and cultural landmarks worldwide. As tourism increases and social media influences visitor behavior, site managers must balance accessibility with preservation concerns. The Zugspitze cross restoration represents just one example of how traditional monuments are adapting to modern tourism pressures and changing visitor expectations.

For now, those reaching Germany’s highest point will find the famous peak temporarily bare, awaiting the return of its restored golden sentinel in the coming weeks.
