Thailand and Cambodia Exchange Fire as Border Conflict Reignites
Thailand launched airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia on Monday, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. Both countries have accused each other of violating a ceasefire agreement that had temporarily halted hostilities earlier this year.
The renewed fighting has already claimed the lives of one Thai soldier and four Cambodian civilians, according to officials from both sides. At least eight Thai soldiers and nine Cambodian civilians have been reported injured in the clashes.
The conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with the Thai army reporting that more than 50,000 people have fled border areas for shelter. Cambodia’s Information Minister Neth Pheaktra confirmed that tens of thousands of residents have been displaced from several villages near the contested frontier.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul defended his country’s military operations in a televised address, emphasizing that they were necessary to protect Thailand’s sovereignty.
“Thailand has never wished for violence. I’d like to reiterate that Thailand has never initiated a fight or an invasion, but will never tolerate a violation of its sovereignty,” Charnvirakul stated.
Across the border, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet used social media to rally his nation during what he described as “this difficult period.”
“I ask all ministries, institutions, authorities at all levels, all types of armed forces and all Cambodian citizens to unite for the cause of the nation and the homeland,” Hun Manet wrote on Facebook.
The current violence comes after five days of deadly combat in July that resulted in dozens of casualties among soldiers and civilians. U.S. President Donald Trump intervened in the conflict, pushing both countries to sign a truce agreement in October. Despite these diplomatic efforts, underlying tensions have persisted.
The ceasefire began to unravel in early November when Thai troops were injured by landmines in the border region. Thailand subsequently announced an indefinite suspension of the agreement’s implementation, though both sides were supposed to be cooperating on mine clearance operations.
According to Thai army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree, Cambodian troops initiated the latest round of fighting by firing into Thai territory across multiple areas on Monday. Thailand responded with airstrikes “to strike military targets in several areas to suppress Cambodian supporting fire attacks,” he explained.
Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata offered a contradictory account, claiming that Thai forces attacked first and that Cambodia exercised restraint by not retaliating during the initial assaults.
“Cambodia urges that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activities that threaten peace and stability in the region,” Socheata said.
The conflict has prompted regional concern, with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calling for restraint and offering his country’s support in preventing further escalation.
“Our region cannot afford to see long-standing disputes slip into cycles of confrontation,” Ibrahim wrote in a statement posted to social media.
The territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has deep historical roots dating back centuries to when the two nations existed as competing empires. Modern border disagreements largely stem from a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia’s period under French colonial rule, which Thailand has long contested as inaccurate.
A significant point of contention involves the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, which the International Court of Justice awarded to Cambodia in a 1962 ruling that continues to frustrate many Thais. The October ceasefire agreement notably failed to address these fundamental territorial disagreements, focusing instead on halting immediate hostilities rather than resolving the underlying causes of the conflict.
As fighting continues, international observers remain concerned that without substantive diplomatic engagement addressing the core territorial disputes, the border region may face prolonged instability and recurring violence.

It’s concerning to see these tensions reignite between Thailand and Cambodia. As neighbors in Southeast Asia, I hope they can find a way to deescalate the situation and find a peaceful resolution to their border disagreements. Continued fighting will only lead to more suffering for the people.
Thailand’s justification of protecting its sovereignty is understandable, but the use of airstrikes seems like an excessive response. I hope both sides can find a way to resolve this through peaceful negotiations rather than further military escalation.
This border dispute has a long and complex history. While I don’t condone the use of force, I can see how each side feels justified in its actions to defend its territorial claims. Ultimately, a diplomatic solution is needed to prevent further loss of life.
The humanitarian crisis caused by these clashes is very troubling. Tens of thousands displaced is a huge number. I hope aid and support can quickly reach those affected on both sides of the border.
Agreed. The wellbeing of civilians caught in the crossfire should be the top priority for both governments.
This is a concerning escalation of tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. I hope both sides can de-escalate the situation and find a diplomatic resolution to their border disputes. Civilians should not have to bear the brunt of these military operations.
