Thailand conducted airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia late Monday, escalating tensions in a region where a fragile ceasefire had been in place. Both nations are now trading accusations about which side initiated the latest outbreak of violence.

According to Thai military officials, Cambodian forces opened fire first in several areas along the frontier, resulting in the death of one Thai soldier and injuring others. Major General Winthai Suvaree told The Associated Press that Thai aircraft were deployed to strike “military targets in several areas to suppress Cambodian supporting fire attacks.” Thai authorities have begun evacuating civilians from communities near the conflict zone as the situation intensifies.

Cambodia has firmly rejected Thailand’s version of events. Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata claimed that Thai forces were the aggressors and stated that Cambodia did not retaliate during the initial confrontation. The ministry issued an urgent call for Thailand to halt its military operations.

The human impact of the conflict was immediately apparent, as footage released by Cambodia’s Education Ministry showed students being evacuated from schools near the border area, with families rushing to retrieve their children from the danger zone.

This escalation follows a smaller exchange of fire on Sunday, when Thailand reported that Cambodian forces wounded two of its soldiers before Thai troops responded for approximately 20 minutes. Cambodia maintained that Thailand initiated that encounter as well and insisted it did not return fire.

The renewed hostilities have cast doubt on the viability of a ceasefire agreement brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump in October. That accord had ended five days of intense fighting in July that claimed dozens of lives, including both military personnel and civilians. However, the peace deal showed signs of strain last month when several Thai soldiers were injured by land mines in contested areas, prompting Thailand to suspend implementation of parts of the agreement.

Despite provisions in the ceasefire calling for cooperation on mine removal and border stabilization efforts, both sides have continued to accuse each other of violations, undermining confidence in the peace process.

The current border conflict is rooted in centuries of historical rivalry between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. Modern disputes center largely on French colonial-era border maps that Thailand contends are inaccurate. The territorial disagreement remains unresolved despite the October ceasefire agreement, creating conditions for recurring hostilities.

Regional security analysts warn that without renewed diplomatic engagement, these skirmishes risk escalating into a wider conflict. The situation has raised concerns throughout Southeast Asia about regional stability and the effectiveness of international mediation efforts.

The Trump-brokered agreement, which was signed with considerable fanfare by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Kuala Lumpur this October, was initially hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough. However, the underlying territorial issues remain unaddressed, and implementation has faced significant challenges.

The international community is closely watching developments along the Thailand-Cambodia border, as any prolonged conflict could have broader implications for regional security and economic cooperation in Southeast Asia. Both nations are important members of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and a protracted border conflict could complicate the bloc’s unity on other regional issues.

As the situation evolves, diplomatic channels remain open, though tensions on the ground continue to pose immediate security concerns for residents in border communities on both sides.
