Federal authorities have arrested a 21-year-old Texas man on international terrorism charges for allegedly providing bomb-making materials and financial support to individuals he believed were affiliated with the Islamic State group, according to a Justice Department announcement on Monday.

John Michael Garza Jr. of Midlothian, Texas, faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted of the charges stemming from a December 22 sting operation. Garza was taken into custody after allegedly providing explosive materials to an undercover FBI agent whom he believed was an “ISIS brother.”

The investigation began in October when an undercover New York City Police Department employee discovered Garza’s social media account, which followed several profiles supporting the Islamic State group. The undercover officer initiated contact with Garza, who reportedly soon expressed his adherence to ISIS ideology.

According to federal prosecutors, Garza sent cryptocurrency payments to the undercover employee in November and December, believing the funds would support ISIS operations. The case escalated when Garza agreed to meet with an individual he thought was associated with the terrorist organization.

During this December 22 meeting, Garza allegedly provided bomb-making materials to an undercover FBI agent, explained how to mix explosives, and offered to share instructional videos on bomb construction. Federal agents arrested Garza shortly after he left the meeting.

“Today’s announcement underscores the FBI’s commitment to combatting terrorism and demonstrates our continuous work to disrupt and thwart terrorist plots against the American public,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. “Let this serve as a warning to those who plan to conduct attacks against the United States on behalf of terrorist organizations – you will be brought to justice.”

The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic radicalization and the role of social media in facilitating connections between potential extremists and terrorist organizations. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly focused resources on monitoring online activities that indicate support for designated terrorist groups.

This arrest comes amid heightened vigilance by U.S. counterterrorism units following several international conflicts that have intensified recruitment efforts by extremist organizations. Intelligence officials have warned about the persistent threat of “homegrown” extremists who become radicalized through online propaganda.

The Justice Department’s prosecution of Garza represents part of a broader strategy to intercept potential terrorist threats before they materialize into attacks. Federal authorities have employed similar sting operations in recent years to identify individuals attempting to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations.

Court records did not list an attorney for Garza, and the federal public defender’s office in Dallas did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Following his initial court appearance on December 23 in U.S. District Court for Northern Texas, Garza is scheduled for a probable cause and detention hearing on Tuesday, where prosecutors will present their evidence against him.

The case falls under federal terrorism statutes that prohibit providing material support to designated foreign terrorist organizations. Such charges have become a primary tool for prosecutors seeking to intervene before potential attacks can be carried out.

Law enforcement officials emphasize that the public was never in immediate danger during the investigation, as Garza was under surveillance throughout his interactions with undercover agents. The case demonstrates the coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in counterterrorism operations.

As the legal proceedings against Garza move forward, the case will likely draw attention to the ongoing challenges of preventing domestic radicalization and the effectiveness of sting operations as counterterrorism tools.
