In a startling turn of events that has shocked a Buddhist community outside Bangkok, a 65-year-old Thai woman who was believed to be dead was discovered alive inside her coffin moments before her planned cremation.

Temple staff at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham in Nonthaburi province were stunned when they heard faint knocking sounds coming from inside the coffin as they discussed cremation arrangements with the woman’s brother on Sunday.

“I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled,” explained Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general and financial affairs manager. “I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time.”

The temple later shared video footage on Facebook showing the woman moving her arms and head inside the white coffin, which was positioned in the back of a pickup truck. Onlookers appeared visibly shocked by the unexpected development.

According to Soodthoop, the woman’s brother had driven approximately 300 miles from Phitsanulok province to Bangkok with his sister’s body. He explained that she had been bedridden for about two years before her health rapidly declined. When she appeared to stop breathing two days earlier, he assumed she had died and placed her in a coffin.

The brother’s initial destination was a Bangkok hospital, as his sister had previously expressed wishes to donate her organs. However, hospital staff refused to accept the woman without an official death certificate—a critical document in Thailand’s death registration process.

With the hospital unable to help, the brother turned to Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, which offers free cremation services to the community. Temple staff also informed him that they couldn’t proceed without proper documentation.

It was during this conversation about obtaining the necessary paperwork that temple staff heard the knocking sounds that would save the woman’s life. Upon opening the coffin and confirming she was indeed alive, emergency services were called, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The temple’s abbot has since announced that the facility will cover all medical expenses related to the woman’s care, according to Soodthoop.

This extraordinary incident highlights potential issues in death verification practices, particularly in rural areas of Thailand where medical facilities may be limited. In some remote communities, families may not have immediate access to medical professionals who can properly certify death, leading to situations where presumed deaths occur without proper verification.

Buddhist funeral traditions in Thailand typically involve cremation ceremonies that take place several days after death, allowing time for religious ceremonies and for family members to gather. This practice may have inadvertently provided the crucial time window that saved the woman’s life.

Similar incidents, though rare, have been reported in other parts of the world. In 2020, a woman in Ecuador was mistakenly declared dead during the COVID-19 pandemic only to be found alive in her hospital coffin. In India, several cases have emerged of people regaining consciousness shortly before cremation ceremonies.

Medical experts note that certain conditions, including severe hypothermia or metabolic disorders, can sometimes create states that mimic death, with extremely faint vital signs that might be missed without specialized equipment.

Local authorities have not released information about the woman’s current medical condition or what may have caused her to appear deceased for such an extended period.

The incident has captivated local media attention and serves as a remarkable reminder of the importance of proper medical death certification procedures.
