In a London court on Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy admitted to setting fire to a building in northwest London but claimed he was unaware the target was a synagogue. The teenager, whose identity remains protected due to his age, pleaded guilty to arson not endangering life at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Surveillance footage captured the teenager climbing over a wall at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow on Saturday night. He was seen igniting a bottle of liquid before throwing it through a broken window. While the fire caused smoke damage to the building, no injuries were reported.

“I have no hate toward the Jewish people,” the boy stated in a written statement presented to the court. “I am very sorry for my actions.” He maintained that he didn’t know the building was a synagogue and had no intention of harming anyone.

The court granted the teenager bail and ordered him to appear at Willesden Youth Court on June 4 for further proceedings. Meanwhile, police have arrested and subsequently released a 19-year-old man in connection with the investigation and are actively seeking two additional suspects.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of arson attacks targeting Jewish sites across the United Kingdom since late March. The series of attacks began on March 23 when four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green, north London, were set ablaze. The charity serves people of all faiths, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in any of these incidents.

British authorities are investigating potential international connections to these attacks. Police have disclosed they are examining whether Iran might be orchestrating these incidents through proxies as part of a broader geopolitical strategy amid ongoing tensions involving Israel and the United States. The investigation has expanded to include six recent attacks, one of which targeted a Persian-language media organization known for its criticism of Iran’s government.

The coordinated response has been substantial, with counterterrorism police reporting 23 arrests to date. Seven individuals were detained specifically on suspicion of conspiring to set fire to a Jewish venue, according to London’s Metropolitan Police.

A previously unknown group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, translated as Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks in Britain. Police reports indicate this group has also admitted involvement in incidents targeting places of worship, businesses, and financial institutions across Europe in recent months, with apparent links to Jewish or Israeli interests.

Israeli intelligence has suggested the recently formed group has suspected connections to “an Iranian proxy,” though independent verification of these links remains ongoing.

The attacks have heightened concerns within Britain’s Jewish community, which has experienced increased tensions and security threats since the escalation of Middle East conflicts in recent months. Community leaders have called for enhanced security measures around synagogues, schools, and other Jewish institutions throughout the country.

These incidents occur against a backdrop of rising antisemitism across Europe, with several countries reporting increased hate crimes targeting Jewish communities. Law enforcement agencies are coordinating their efforts internationally to address what appears to be a coordinated campaign targeting Jewish interests across multiple countries.
