Austrian Man Pleads Guilty to Taylor Swift Concert Terror Plot
A 21-year-old Austrian citizen has pleaded guilty to plotting a terrorist attack targeting Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna last summer, his lawyer confirmed as the trial began Tuesday. Identified only as Beran A. due to Austrian privacy laws, the defendant admitted to planning an assault on Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour performance that was scheduled for August 2024.
“Of course, he deeply regrets it all,” defense attorney Anna Mair told reporters outside the courthouse. “He says it was the biggest mistake of his life.”
The defendant faces charges including terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. According to Austrian media, he pleaded guilty to both the concert plot and to being a member of the Islamic State group.
Austrian authorities canceled Swift’s three Vienna performances after receiving intelligence about the threat, including crucial information from U.S. sources. The cancellation devastated thousands of Swift’s fans, known as “Swifties,” who had traveled internationally for the concerts. In response, fans transformed Vienna into an impromptu celebration with friendship bracelet exchanges and group singalongs despite the disappointment.
Prosecutors allege Beran A. intended to target crowds outside Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. With capacity for 65,000 inside the venue and up to 30,000 additional people gathered outside each night, authorities stated the suspect aimed to “kill as many people as possible.” When police searched his apartment on August 7, 2024—just a day before the concerts were to begin—they discovered bomb-making materials.
The thwarted plot drew immediate comparisons to the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing following an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22 people—the deadliest extremist attack in the UK in recent years.
Two weeks after the canceled concerts, Swift addressed the situation on Instagram: “Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
The Vienna concert plot was allegedly part of a broader terrorist conspiracy. Beran A. is standing trial alongside another defendant identified as Arda K., who faces terrorism charges related to planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024. While Beran A. pleaded guilty to the Swift concert plot, he maintained his innocence regarding the multi-country attack scheme.
A third alleged conspirator, identified as Hasan E., reportedly stabbed a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on March 11, 2024, and remains in pretrial detention there. Beran A. and Arda K. did not execute their planned attacks in Turkey and the UAE. According to prosecutors, after returning to Vienna, Beran A. shifted his focus to targeting Swift’s concert.
Investigators say Beran A. networked with other Islamic State members while planning the concert attack, discussing weapon purchases and bomb-making techniques. He allegedly attempted to illegally acquire weapons in the days leading up to the planned attack and had pledged allegiance to the militant group.
The trial, being held in Wiener Neustadt about an hour south of Vienna, is scheduled to continue on May 12. Representatives for Swift have not yet commented on the latest developments in the case.
The high-profile trial underscores ongoing concerns about soft-target terrorism at major public events and illustrates the continued threat posed by extremist ideologies, even as major militant groups have lost territorial control in recent years.
