Swiss authorities have completed the identification of all individuals injured in the devastating New Year’s Day fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, revising the total number of injured to 116, officials announced Monday.

Police corrected their previous estimate of 119 injured after determining three people admitted to hospitals that night were erroneously linked to the tragedy. The fire, which claimed 40 lives, stands as one of Switzerland’s deadliest nightlife disasters in recent memory.

Of the 116 injured, 83 remain hospitalized, underscoring the severity of the blaze that tore through the popular alpine resort establishment. The international nature of the resort town is reflected in the victim demographics, with 68 Swiss citizens representing the largest group among the injured.

Foreign nationals make up a significant portion of those affected, including 21 French, 10 Italians, four Serbs, two Poles, and individuals from Australia, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Portugal, and the Republic of Congo. Four victims held dual citizenship.

The identification process proved particularly challenging due to the severity of burns suffered by many victims. Authorities required DNA samples from families to conclusively identify some of the deceased. The youngest victim was just 14 years old, officials confirmed Sunday.

In a solemn ceremony Monday, Italian authorities repatriated the bodies of five victims from the airport in Sion, the regional capital. Swiss police pallbearers carried coffins through a line of firefighters and soldiers to an Italian Air Force C-130 cargo plane, while mourners embraced before boarding the aircraft with their loved ones.

Investigators believe the fire originated when festive sparkling candles placed on Champagne bottles came too close to the ceiling, igniting the blaze that rapidly engulfed the crowded venue during peak New Year’s celebrations. The fire spread quickly through the establishment, which was reportedly filled beyond capacity for the holiday event.

Swiss authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the bar’s management. The two managers face potential charges of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm, and involuntarily causing a fire, according to the Valais region’s chief prosecutor. Questions regarding adherence to fire safety regulations, emergency exit accessibility, and occupancy limits will likely feature prominently in the investigation.

The tragedy has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in nightlife establishments across Switzerland, particularly in tourist destinations that see significant seasonal population increases. Local officials have promised a thorough review of emergency response procedures and venue safety requirements in the wake of the disaster.

Crans-Montana, typically known as an upscale ski destination in the Swiss Alps, has established a crisis support center for survivors, families of victims, and emergency responders affected by the traumatic event. Psychological counseling services have been made available to the community as it begins the difficult healing process.

As the investigation continues, the focus will shift to determining whether negligence played a role in the high casualty count and if similar tragedies can be prevented through enhanced safety measures. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers in crowded entertainment venues and the critical importance of proper safety protocols.
