Suicide Bombers Target Security Headquarters in Northwestern Pakistan, Killing Three
Three security officers were killed and eleven others wounded when two suicide bombers and a gunman attacked the provincial headquarters of the Federal Constabulary in Peshawar, Pakistan on Monday morning, according to police and rescue officials.
The attack occurred as approximately 150 security personnel were assembling for morning parade drills at the sprawling facility located in the heart of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
Peshawar Police Chief Saeed Ahmad told The Associated Press that one attacker detonated explosives at the main gate of the headquarters, while security forces shot and killed the second bomber and an armed accomplice near the parking area before they could reach the parade ground.
“The terrorists involved in today’s attack were on foot and failed to reach the parade area and a timely response by our forces prevented a much larger tragedy,” Ahmad said.
Police have completed their clearance operation at the site and collected body parts from the suicide bombers for DNA testing to establish their identities and nationalities. Authorities continue to investigate the background of the three attackers.
Asim Khan, a spokesperson for the government-run Lady Reading Hospital, confirmed that all eleven wounded personnel are in stable condition.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack as a “cowardly act by foreign-backed terrorists,” while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the swift security response that prevented a more devastating outcome. Both leaders expressed condolences to victims’ families.
Although no organization has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have been implicated in similar assaults. The TTP, which maintains an alliance with but operates independently from the Afghan Taliban, has been at the center of Pakistan’s surge in militant violence.
This attack comes amid escalating regional tensions and follows a deadly suicide bombing outside a court in Islamabad less than two weeks ago that killed twelve people. The recent wave of violence has further strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban government.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban administration of allowing TTP militants to operate freely from Afghan territory since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 2021. Afghan authorities have consistently rejected these allegations.
Bilateral tensions reached a critical point after Afghanistan blamed Pakistan for drone strikes in Kabul on October 9, vowing retaliation. The subsequent border clashes resulted in dozens of casualties, including soldiers, civilians, and militants, before Qatar brokered a ceasefire on October 19, which remains in effect.
Following the ceasefire, officials from both countries held two rounds of talks in Istanbul but failed to reach an agreement when Afghanistan refused to provide written guarantees preventing the TTP from using Afghan soil to launch attacks against Pakistan.
In response to the ongoing threat, Pakistan has intensified military operations against TTP insurgents in recent weeks, reportedly killing dozens of militants in areas along the Afghan border. These operations reflect Pakistan’s determination to combat the rising militant threat despite diplomatic complications with its neighbor.
The attack in Peshawar highlights the persistent security challenges facing Pakistan, particularly in regions bordering Afghanistan, where militant groups continue to exploit political instability and porous borders to carry out violent attacks against security forces and civilians.
Security analysts note that the TTP has shown resilience despite Pakistani counterterrorism efforts, adapting their tactics and exploiting regional tensions to maintain operational capabilities in the border regions.
