Indian Cinema’s Master Filmmaker Rajamouli Unveils Epic “Varanasi” with Star-Studded Cast
Acclaimed director S.S. Rajamouli, whose blockbusters “RRR” and “Baahubali” redefined Indian cinema’s global reach, revealed his most ambitious project yet at a spectacular event in Hyderabad that drew thousands of enthusiastic fans.
The filmmaker unveiled “Varanasi” – previously known by its working title “Globe Trotter” – at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City on Saturday. While specific plot details remain guarded, the nearly four-minute preview revealed a visually stunning time-travel adventure drawing from Hindu mythology and borrowing its name from one of Hinduism’s holiest cities.
During the presentation, Rajamouli mentioned that one of the film’s sequences draws inspiration from “an important episode” in the Ramayana, the ancient Hindu epic chronicling Lord Rama’s life. The director confirmed the film will be presented in IMAX format with a targeted 2027 release date.
“Here you go… VARANASI to the WORLD…” Rajamouli wrote on social media platform X after the event.
For this cinematic spectacle, Rajamouli has assembled an impressive ensemble cast featuring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, international actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and acclaimed actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film represents Chopra Jonas’ return to Indian cinema following her Hollywood career. In promotional materials, she appears as the character Mandakini, wearing a mustard sari and wielding a pistol while perched on a cliff’s edge.
“Varanasi” marks the first collaboration between Rajamouli and Babu, who is portrayed in first-look materials as a fierce warrior covered in blood, riding a white bull and holding a trident. Making a dramatic entrance at the event, Babu arrived onstage mounted on a mechanical white bull.
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime project,” Babu told the crowd after unveiling the teaser. “I will make everyone proud. The whole of India will be proud of us.”
The unveiling took place on a massive scale befitting Rajamouli’s cinematic vision. Thousands of fans watched the first footage on a colossal 110-by-130-foot screen surrounded by replicas of Varanasi city. The event transformed into a festival-like celebration with elaborate light displays, dazzling fireworks, and crowds dancing to both new and classic Telugu music.
The Telugu-language film industry, often called Tollywood, has carved its own distinct identity separate from Hindi-language Bollywood. Known for high-octane action sequences, mythic storylines and grand visual style, Tollywood has seen its global profile rise dramatically in recent years – with much of that success attributed to Rajamouli’s distinctive filmmaking approach.
Rajamouli became an international sensation after “RRR,” his 2022 three-hour Telugu-language epic set in colonial India. The sprawling anti-colonial tale became one of India’s biggest hits before transforming into a global streaming phenomenon and ultimately winning an Oscar for best original song. His two-part “Baahubali” series, released in 2015 and 2017, shattered box-office records across India and introduced Western audiences to Telugu cinema’s visual grandeur. A re-edited version combining both parts, titled “Baahubali: The Epic,” was released in theaters worldwide just last month.
Many devoted Tollywood fans traveled considerable distances to witness the unveiling and catch a glimpse of Babu, who commands an almost religious following among his supporters.
“It’s not actually Tollywood now, it’s global now,” said Manideep Rayudu, a fan who attended the event. “Our superstar Mahesh Babu is not a regional star anymore. He is a global star.”
The announcement of “Varanasi” further solidifies Rajamouli’s position as one of world cinema’s most visually ambitious filmmakers, with his unique blend of mythology, action and spectacle continuing to bridge cultural divides and find international audiences.
