South Africa’s police chief suspended over suspect contract

South Africa’s police commissioner Fannie Masemola has been suspended by President Cyril Ramaphosa following charges of financial misconduct linked to an allegedly corrupt police contract worth 360 million rand ($21 million).

Masemola appeared in court on Tuesday to face four counts of violating the Public Finance Management Act. He is scheduled to return alongside 12 other senior police officers implicated in the case. The group faces allegations of fraud, corruption, and money laundering connected to a contract that prosecutors claim was unlawfully awarded to a local company.

The charges against Masemola specifically relate to his responsibilities as the accounting officer for the South African Police Service, where he held ultimate financial oversight for major contracts.

“I have agreed with General Masemola that he be deemed to be on precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of the case,” Ramaphosa announced during a press briefing on Thursday. The president has appointed Puleng Dimpane, the commissioner for financial management services within the police service, to serve as acting police commissioner while legal proceedings continue.

The contract at the center of the scandal involved health and wellness services for police officers. Prosecutors allege that some police officials received bribes from winning bidders in exchange for favorable treatment during the procurement process.
