South African Authorities Extract Crocodile Suspected in Businessman’s Death

South African authorities conducted a dramatic operation this weekend, airlifting a massive crocodile believed to have consumed a local businessman who disappeared last month. The high-risk recovery effort along the Komati River revealed human remains in the reptile’s digestive system, confirming authorities’ suspicions.

The victim, identified by local media as Gabriel Batista, a 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng and owner of the Border Country Inn, went missing in late April. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Batista’s Ford Ranger became stranded at a flooded low-lying river crossing near waters known to be inhabited by crocodiles. State broadcaster SABCNews reported the vehicle was swept away as he attempted to cross the bridge.

Following a week-long search operation, a specialized task force identified a suspicious crocodile approximately 150 meters from where the victim was believed to have been washed off the bridge. The reptile’s behavior drew immediate attention from authorities.

“When the helicopter went over it, it wouldn’t move away,” explained SAPS Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, who led the recovery effort. “We know from experience that if crocodiles have had a big meal, they’re not very active, and need to lie in the sun for their digestive system to start working.”

After monitoring the crocodile for several days and noting its prolonged inactivity, authorities obtained necessary permissions to euthanize the animal. The operation then entered its most perilous phase, with Captain Potgieter being lowered from a helicopter into the crocodile-infested waters under what officials described as “extremely dangerous conditions.”

The extraction, captured on camera and widely shared on social media, shows the massive reptile secured with rope and airlifted from the area. Videos released by the Government Communication and Information System of Mpumalanga Province show a wildlife specialist dangling alongside the crocodile as it was transported by helicopter.

A subsequent examination of the crocodile confirmed authorities’ suspicions when human remains were discovered in its digestive system. In a disturbing development, SABC News reported that six pairs of sandals were also found in the animal’s stomach, raising questions about whether the crocodile may have been involved in other disappearances in the region.

The recovered remains have been submitted for DNA testing to conclusively identify the victim. Authorities have not yet commented on whether the additional footwear discovered could be linked to other missing persons cases in the area.

This incident highlights the ongoing dangers posed by wildlife in parts of South Africa, particularly in rural areas near rivers and waterways where crocodiles are prevalent. The Komati River, which flows through Mpumalanga Province, has long been known as habitat for Nile crocodiles, which can grow to over five meters in length and weigh up to 750 kilograms.

Local conservation authorities regularly warn residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution when near water bodies known to harbor crocodiles, particularly during rainy seasons when water levels rise and crocodiles may be more active or present in areas usually considered safe.

The South African Police Service has not yet released additional details regarding the investigation, though they have confirmed that forensic testing is underway to positively identify the remains and bring closure to the victim’s family.
